NYC/Brooklyn Help by Jud Banks Mon May 11 1992 ------------------------------- I need some help in New York City/Brooklyn. I'm tracing a Rev. Mason GALLAGHER, b. 24 Aug. 1821, d. after 29 June 1895, probably soon after. He attended Hobart College (Geneva, NY), class of 1840. Bio reads, "(Rev.) Mason Gallagher, M.A. '43. Son of George, Geneva. S.T.D. U.S. Grant Univ. Gen Theol. Sem. '44. Ord. '44; R. and Miss., W.N.Y. Min. Ref. Ep. Ch. Eugloss, Paterson, N.J." Not sure I understand all the abbreviations, e.g., "S.T.D." (studied?); R. and Miss.(???); W.N.Y. (Western New York?). I think the next part, "Min. Ref...etc. means, Minister, Reformed Episcopal Church, but what's "Eugloss?" Mason married Lucy STEBBINS from the Geneva, NY area. They had no children. On June 29, 1895, Mason was living at 70 S. Oxford St., Brooklyn, NY. He's supposed to have had in his possession a portrait of George Washington, painted by Charles Willson Peale. Research indicates what he had was not the original, but may have been a copy painted by Peale. It "disappeared." I need someone to check the 1895-96-97 death indices to see if Mason died in Brooklyn and if any will or probate was filed. The New York Historical Society is supposed to have something on Mason but, "due to staff shortage," they cannot look it up or furnish copies. Thanks.
