DU BOIS by Steph Valentine 22 May 1990 ------------------------------------------------ I checked Mather's "The Refugees of 1776 from Long Island to Connecticut" [1913] for DuBois: p.340: A descendant of Col Nicoll Floyd and Gen William Floyd: John Gelston m. (1) Julia F. DuBois (mid 1800's, I'd guess) p.342: A brother of John Gelston, Nicoll Gelston m. Cornelia DuBois and had Nicoll, a broker living at Garden City, LI, and Marion, m. Dr. C. L. From Riker's History of Harlem, NY, revised and from DeLaMater's Genealogy of the Descendants of Claude Le Maitre all I can ascertain is that Hester Du BOIS (d/o Pierre DuBOIS) m. 24 Apr 1652 Amsterdam, HOLLAND, Claude LeMAISTRE. I'd like to pin down her place and date of birth and pertinent information on Pierre DuBOIS, her father. And -- if possible -- ancestry. The above cited references indicate Huguenot origins. So it seems I may be on the right track with the DuBOIS Family Association and the Huguenot Historical Society. Perhaps you, or others reading this, may also be able to shed some light on Hester and her father, Pierre DuBOIS. Also, who was her mother??? And her mama's ancestry??? --- FD 1.99c * Origin: Kin Ships - East Orange, NJ - (201) 676-7066 - (1:269/123) Date: Fri Nov 16 1990 15:05:24 From: Terry Oehler To: All Subj: DUBOSE / DUBOIS Attr: genealogy ------------------------------- Sorry, I'm about out of time, so I can't go back and see who has been corresponding about Dubose / Dubois in order to address this properly. I am descended from Louis DuBois, a Huguenot refugee who arrived at Esopus NY in 1661 with wife Catharine Blanshan (I have her parents). By 1662 they had settled in the village of Hurley. Catharine and others were taken prisoners by the Indians; while looking for them, DuBois and others found the area where they later founded the town of New Paltz NY, in the spring of 1678. They organized the French Reformed Church in 1683; Louis DuBOIS was elected elder. Son ABRAHAM DuBOIS married MARGARET DEYO (I have her parents) March 6, 1681. The third of their eight children was my ancestor, LEAH DuBOIS, born at New Paltz October 16, 1687. ABRAHAM died October 7, 1731. LEAH married my ancestor PHILIP FERREE, another Huguenot refugee.
