De Haven Family - Penn. by Bonnie Bunce Fri Jul 31 1992 ------------------------------- MD> This sounds like the family of the Samuel DeHAVEN who was MD> b. in KY, and MD> lived and died in Fayette Co., IN. I believe that his Margaret, how interesting that your Samuel DeHaven was born in Kentucky. He might possibly have been a son of Edward DeHaven, one of four brothers that came to Pennsylvania before the Rev. War. Harold DeHaven Ross, one of their descendants wrote a very small book, 36 pages long, with an ancestor chart enclosed, that tells about this family. There were 4 brothers, Jacob, who lent a lot of money to the American cause during the Rev.War, and died without leaving any children; Samuel b. 1724 in France, d 1815 age 91, Edward of whom Mr. Ross said only that he settled in Kentucky and Peter DeHaven, who m. Elizabeth Knight at Old Christ Church in Philadelphia in 1763, d. 1815, descendants in Pennsylvania and Virginia. As to my connection to the DeHaven family, I have only the vaguest idea. Shortly before I was born my father and mother visited her parents in New York. At that time my dad had conversations with my grandfather Cole about his ancestors. My father took down notes of the conversations, and many years later we found those notes among some old family photographs. Among the things my grandfather said was that he was a descendant of Jacob DeHaven who was a French Huguenot (an assertion I checked and it seems to be a "red herring"). Also the Jacob DeHaven, one of these 4 brothers, did not leave any living children when he died as both his sons predeceased him. Anyway it appears from my father's notes that a DeHaven married a Kennedy in Pennsylvania, where my great grandmother, Ida (Kennedy) Cole was born. How far distant the connection is between Ida and this supposed DeHaven ancestor is, I don't know. I know my great grandmother's name was Ida Kennedy from my grandparents' marriage certificate from New York City, which gives the names of both their parents. Peter DeHaven looked like the best bet as my ancestor from the information in Howard D. Ross' little book, as my grandfather had told my father that his mother was born in West Chester, Chester Co., Pennsylvania, which is just outside of Philadelphia. She was born in 1855 and died 1898. I've tried to find a census record for that area in 1860 that shows a dau. named Ida, 5 years old, without any success, but will keep trying. Decided to try another angle, which is not the best genealogical approach, I guess. There's supposed to be a Jesse or Jessie Kennedy that married a DeHaven, but I don't know if it's female or male, and whether these people would be my g.g.grandparents or an even earlier ancestor. Margaret, I would appreciate it if you would keep me in mind if you find any additional information on the DeHaven family. My address is: 11882 E. Kepner Drive, Aurora, CO 80012-3284. Thanks.
