MONTAGNE & DEFOREST by Arthur White 7 April 1990 ------------------------------------------------ Although not related to MONTAGNE, I did discover considerable information about him in the book A WALLOON FAMILY IN AMERICA: LOCKWOOD DEFOREST AND HIS FORBEARS 1500-1848, by Mrs. Robert W. Deforest, New York, 1914. It is on micro-fiche and you might ask you local library to try to obtain it by interloan. The Sutro Branch of the Califoria State Library has a copy: 480 Winston Drive, San Francisco. I am a descendant of MONTAGNE's brother- in-law, Henri (Henry/Hendrick DEFOREST (FOREST, deFREEST, deFORET); Rachel's brother. If you are a descendant of Rachel DEFOREST, the following chart will be of interest. Please let me know if you have further information or interest in the DEFOREST family. I am currently interested in finding the book which Mrs. DeForest cites as her source: THE DE FORESTS OF AVESNES (AND OF NEW NETHERLAND), A HUGUENOT THREAD IN AMERICAN COLONIAL HISTORY, 1494 TO THE PRESENT TIME, by John W. My information is that Michael DEFOREST was the son of Henri/Hendrick DEFOREST/DEFREEST and Gertrude BORNSTRA. He was born while Henri was in New Amsterdam and later emigrated to Acadia. My particular family branch then moved through Canada, on to Maine, and back to New York 200 years after Henri's death through the MORONG and OWEN families, seafarers from Eastport Maine. My source at this point, and it is only secondary, is my late cousin William MORONG. He assured me in a letter last year that Michael DEFOREST of Port Royal, Acadia was indeed our link to the DEFOREST family of Hainaut and that he was the son of Hendrick and grandson of the famous Jesse. He was not in good health at the time and offered no other details. He was writing a book on the MORONG family when he died, and perhaps that will reveal more. His son is expected to carry on that work. Thank you for the Crispin information, perhaps there is more to this tale yet. I have read "A Walloon Family...", and would also refer you to "The Belgians: First Settlers In New York and in the Middle Atlantic States", by H. G. Bayer, Heritage Books, Inc. 1987, and " The Deforests of Avesnes and New Netherlands", J. W. Deforest, 1900. My mailing address is 23 Richland Avenue, San Francisco, CA 94110. Please, in future BBS messages, don't quote back my entire message. It makes our benevolent sysops peevish as they are bearing the cost of our extravagance. --- Opus-CBCS 1.73a * Origin: Roots(SF!) There is a bit of a clound ove AW>his origin. I have it. He was born in neither Holland or Acadia, but---- FLANDERS Here it is, taken from" Le Grand Arrangement des Acadians au Quebec" by Bergeron: Michel deforest b.1638 in Avesnes, Flandres, Married Marie Hebert in 1665 (*note correction) in Port Royal, Acadian. A big paragraph about him says that the name used was Foret before they came to Acadia and is taken from the Village de Foret, near that of Babin, and the town of Douai is mentioned. Other names used were Quartdeville and de Lewarde. There were 4 children..the one you have missing is Michel II. I didnt check Michel Sr.'s parents names with what you have..my omission, sorry. The paragraph is in the same book and is in French, which could bear a better translation than what I have here. I may recheck it the next time I go, since the library was a zoo today, I had two guests and didnt give my full attention to everything I was doing. Hope your family will now all talk to each other. I wont be back there for a couple of weeks, but this goes back into my folder for a bit more perusal. Patti --- * Origin: Roots and Branches - Billerica, Ma (508) 670-9053 (1:324/281)
