DAVIDHEISER, Henry H. of Douglass twn., Maria YERGER of Pottsgrove twn., 24 Nov 1860 ------------------------------------------------ KD> With your help, I may have gotten very lucky! How can I get KD> more information from Donna R. Irish, "Pennsylvania German KD> Marriages"? The information you sent showed Samuel DAVIDHEISER KD> marrying Anna EGEL on 13 Aug 1848. This was found on page 569 KD> in the records of Falkner Swamp Luthern Church, New Hanover Twp, KD> Montgomery Co. Is there additional information in this book KD> regarding this particular marriage or do I need to look KD> elsewhere? Any suggestions on where I can go from here? . Kate, glad I could help. As for the Samuel DAVIDHEISER marriage, I gave you about everything that was in the book. Note, however, that the page reference (569) is the page in Donna Irish's book, not the church records. Note also that Anna EGEL was a widow. Irish's book was abstracted from copies of Pennsylvania German church records gathered by Dr. William J. HINKE -- HINKE's records are deposited at the Franklin and Marshall Library in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. . As for where to go from here, it depends on what you have already done. Do you have Samuel located in the Federal Census records? If not, you may what to do this first. Other sources of info include tax records, land records, probate records, and Orphan Court records. With the number of DAVIDHAUSER/DEWIDSHAUSER records that I found, sounds like a visit to Montgomery County, PA, is in order -- as I see you mentioned in a later message. I suspect that all these are related, and with that many, there should be quite a few records available. . You may also want to contact one of the local societies in Montgomery County. I have the following in my GENSOC file: . The Historical Society of Montgomery County, 1654 DeKalb Street, Norristown, PA 19401 (215) 272-0297 Dues: $15.00 per year . Old York Road Genealogical Society, 1030 Old York Road, Abington, PA 19001 . Conshohocken Historical Society, Mary H. Wood Park House, 5th Avenue & Harry Street, Conshohocken, PA 19428 Dues: $5.00 per year . Historical Society of Ft. Washington, 473 Bethlehem Pike, Ft. Washington, PA 19034 Dues: $7.00 per year . Lower Merion Historical Society, P.O. Box 51, Ardmore, PA 19003 Dues: $5.00 per year . Plymouth Meeting Historical Society, P.O. Box 167, Plymouth Meeting, PA 19462 Dues: $10.00 per year . I would suggest contacting the Historical Society of Montgomery Co. to see what records they have available and to get any hints on research there that they might give you. Good luck! There is nothing for that name. I then tried David, which he has as a given name (in another book, which I don't have). Heiser is upper german - Austria. It is derived from Heuser (Hauser) the a has the dots over it, known as an umlaut. It means a block of houses (more than one house). Could the original Davidheiser gotten his name because he owned a block of houses? or perhaps that block or group of houses were referred to Davids houses? Interesting thought. Sorry I could not be of more help to you. BTW, I did check on the name in the IGI, but was unable to locate any in Germany. I did however find some in Pennsylvania. Do you already have them, or do you want me to get them for you the next time I go over there (I go at least once a week)? DAVIDHEISER has lived at his present home all his life except one year, when he was engaged in the lumber business in Pottstown. He attended school until he was seventeen years old, and then worked on the farm until he was twenty-one. After spending one year in Pottstown, he returned to the farm. September 5, 1874, Ephraim R. DAVIDHEISER married Catharine, daughter of Henry and Catharine (EPPLER) STEIGER. They were married at Pottstown. Mr. and Mrs. STEIGER lived in Berks county, where he was a farmer. They had four children, of which four are living: Lucy, Ellen, Henry and Catharine (Mrs. DAVIDHEISER). All except the last named live in Berks county. Mr. and Mrs. DAVIDHEISER have no children. Mr. DAVIDHEISER is a Democrat in politics, and a member of the Lutheran church. His wife belongs to the Reformed church of Pottstown. Mr. DAVIDHEISER took charge of the farm the year after his father's death, the estate being settled. He built a new and beautiful home on the old place in 1866, and has improved the property in many ways. The farm is noted for the abundance of refreshing spring water that it yields. ...................... That's all there is. Hope it is of use. Note that there is a mention of the Samuel DAVIDHEISER who married Anna EGEL (EAGLE ?) on 13 Aug 1848 (from the info I gave you before). You had asked for more info on this marriage. According to the info above, Anna's maiden name was LEVENGOOD -- EAGLE was the name of her first husband. Samuel's grandson, Franklin B. DAVIDHEISER, is the first bio above. I have noticed that you have had quite a time of finding the Davidheiser name in Germany. Let me explain something to you that I have experienced. One of my ancestors sisters married a Georg Vesper called Wiedenjuerge. Wiedenjuerge is dialect. The high German name is Weiden Georg. The name means Willow Georg. This was because he made things out of Willow (perhaps weaving baskets, who knows). At any rate his real name was Georg Vesper. If he would have immigrated, his name may very well have been Wiedenjuerge, and I would never have found a name like that. What you have to do is find his true name and see why he was called Davidheiser. Could it have been dialect, as I previously thought? His name may have been David who owned several houses, or a block of houses. David may have been his first name, or it could also have been his last name. Germany is that way (that is if more than one person share the same last name in a town, in order to differentiate, they add on an "also known" or "called" name. Hope this helps some, but I bet it confuses more. Sorry to butt in. My Georg Vesper was the owner of a big estate by the time he married my ancestors sister (but the original Georg Vesper may have been a basket weaver, or something in that line). Another case in point is the name Hagenschmeddes. In actuality the name was Figge called Hagenschmeddes. I do not know the origin of the name, since I don't think that family is in my line anywhere (but I don't know yet). I had a couple of Figge in my line.
