CURTIS in EARLY CONNECTICUT by Joe Lavelle 20 Jan 1990 Here are some of the direct Curtis family lines I found from various sources. Highland Street Cemetery grave record, John son of Jeremiah & Mary Curtis d. Feb 25, 1792 age 11 days. The following is from "Genealogies and Biographies of Ancient Wethersfield", and "History of Torrington". Curtis Family.. Thomas 1, b. 1598, an early sett. here, where his eld. ch. was b. 1639. Joseph 2, b. Mar 31, 1644, m.Feb 8, 1674 to Mercy ??, d. Dec 31, 1683. Thomas 3, b. Nov/Dec 1680, m.Dec 30, 1703, Mary Goodrich, d. Jan 20,1752 Zebulon 4, b. Jan 16, 1710/11, m.Jul 3, 1735, Lydia Cole, d. 1798 John 5, b. Mar 10, 1746, m. Jun 4, 1769, Mary Filley at Torrington. Jeremiah 6, b. Apr 8, 1770, m. Jun 7, 1790, Mary Morton at Chesterfield. Joseph and Thomas married at Wetherfield, Zebulon at Farmington. Zebulon removed to Torrington in 1741. The following is from "Genealogies and Biographies of Ancient Windsor", and "History of Torrington. Filley family. William 1, m. Sep 2, 1642, Margaret ?? Samuel 2, b. Sep 24, 1643, m. Oct 29, 1663, Anna Gillet, d. Jan 4, 1711 Josiah 3, b. Jan 21, 1675, m. Dec 20, 1703, Ester Eggleston William 4, b. Apr 2, 1709, m. Jun 16, 1730, Abiah Millington Mary 5, b. ?? , m. Jun 4, 1769, John Curtis There are some differences on the names and number of the children of William Filley and Abiah Millington. The Curtis family is fairly straight forward, but I can't find any connection to the Scituate family. Unless you can tie them in, or there were two Johns who married two different Mary Filleys, I'm afraid this may throw a monkey wrench into your Curtis lineage. There was no birthplace given for Thomas 1, or a date of arrival in Wethersfield. With a birthdate of 1598 and a first child born in Wethersfield in 1839, he must have been with the first generation of Curtis's to arrive here. Hope you have a good time sorting it out. Thomas 1 wife was Elizabeth ??, and he died in Hartford on Nov 13 1681 age 83. * Origin: The Schoolhouse Lanesboro Ma (Opus 1:321/218) 261/659 ======================================================================== Date: 08 Mar 90 00:12:00 From: Mel Douglass To: Robert Haack Subj: CURTIS (CT) ------------------------------------------------ My line is from Thomas Curtis of Wethersfield, CT. I am relatively new to the hobby(??) of searching my family roots and found this connection last year following some help from Jack Sanders of The Soiurce of Magic BBS. He sent me copies of a few pages from the Rev. Samuel Orcutt's book "A History of the Old Town of Stratford and the city of Bridgeport Connecticut." I was interested in the THOMPSON surname but found that it connected several times to the CURTIS(S) surname. A little more work connected me to the National Society of the Descendants of John and Elizabeth HUTCHINS CURTISS. I attended their 50th anniversary meeting last Oct. in Stratford, CT. There were 50-70 people that attended. While there I picked up a listing for the Congregational Burying Grounds where many CURTIS(S)s are found. The book lists Thomas as having settled in Wallingford, CT. Yes, I am familiar with the Mahetable Foster connection. Read 'An Old Letter in Regards to Phineas Waite' on page 4 of the extract of 'Sketches of the Curtis Family' that I sent you. I did not see any reference to Milliscent Stratton in the IGI at all. I did not copy the information on Mahetable Foster who was listed. The marriage date you list is not necessarily inconsistent with the birth date I carry for Milliscent Waite of 30 Jan 1787. However this does make old Phineas b. 1749 some 39 years old at marriage. Since (in the letter) Mahetable Foster was wife #1, and Milliscent Stratton was #2, this seems possible that Milliscent Waite be the daughter of wife #2. (although not positive). I have no dates on either of the marriages other than the date you just quoted assumed to be that for Mahetable, but without other evidence could be that for Milliscent. In reviewing the book, I find granddaughters with the name of 'Milliscent' in both the Lyman Curtis line and in Mary Curtis Reed line (yours). I find no 'Mahetable' in any of the descentants. I do note though that 8th child of Nahum was named 'Foster' which could be significant. Note also that the letter mentioned was written by the daughter of George Curtis son of Nahum so she was much closer to the situation that either of us had probably had much more on which to base her conclusion. Based on the little evidence that I have, albeit it circumstantial, inconclusive, and perhaps subjective, I feel that Milliscent Stratton is the proper line to pursue. As it happens, I lose nothing in my data as Milliscent Stratton is a dead end. I have not searched Mahetable so far and so nothing lost there either. Ideas ? ? If you have anythng on Mahetable I would accept it but we do need the marriage date of Phineas and Milliscent, and the death date of Mahetable (or divorce if that was the case). This was too early for the plural marriage of the rest of the clan starting with Nahum's children. I usually don't follow the side lines too far, but if you want to send me the info on the REED side, I will file it for reference. As I said, I grew up with so many of those people in all the lines in the Safford valley of AZ that most of the names will be very familiar to me. You didn't say if or not you had the book. If not, I can send you copies of the remaining pages which contain some additional information on the REED line. Mostly just interesting stories & events. Coming in the mail a copy of a letter I received today confirming the marriage of CURTIS, James b. 1671 to JAFFORD, Eleanor of Casco Bay, ME and giving her a father JEFFORDS, Francis. Nahum moved to Illinois, joined LDS, and died at Nauvoo, IL 9 Mar 1846. His descendants to Utah, Ariz, Cal. and elswere during the Mormon settlement of that part of the West. The reason I was interested was the fact that it also briefly covered BEARDSLEY and WORDEN. WILLIAM BEARDSLEY was in the Stratford CT area in the 1600-1700's. I would be interested in finding out what you have on that book "A History of the Old Town of Stratford, etc. What is covered in Part I and Part II? Hope you had a successful trip to Stamford. I would like to get back east one of these days. Grew up in Providence but in those days I wasn't interested in genealogy. Now I live in California and would like to do research back there.
