CUMMINGS in New York by Annette Christensen Tue Nov 13 1990 ------------------------------- I have spent the last two weekends going to the Rochester library doing research on my husbands family. I am still what I consider to be, a novice at genealogy, and was amazed at the wealth of information all in one place. I managed to go back three generations using the New York State census records alone! I am still reeling from the excitment. My husbands grandfather was born in the Town of Newstead, New York, and it turns out so was his father, grandfather, greatgrandfather, and we suspect, from the data we have, so was his gggrandfather! I also spent on day in Akron, New York going through the Pioneer cemetery on Hunts Corner-Akron Rd. looking at grave markers with my husbands grandfather. Talk about stories! He had things to say about almost all the grave markers we saw. I foolishly forgot to bring my tape recorder but wrote down quite a bit of the stories he related. I also took pictures of the related stones to add to my notebook. I plan to return to Akron this weekend to visit another cemetery where my husbands maternal greatgrandfather is buried and hopefully get to the church records there as well. I suspect that having all this information so close at hand is rare, and thank my lucky stars it has been this easy so far. I have a hunch that one of these ancestors may have participated in the civil war but don't know how to find out for sure. Is there a way, without knowing ahead of time, to find this out? Here is the info: JAMES CUMMINGS b. ca. 1825 NY m. Mary Anna b. ca. 1824 son GEORGE W. S. CUMMINGS b. 1848 Town of Newstead, NY m. Maggie (1ST wife) born in France son JASON R. CUMMINGS b. 1871 Town of Newstead, NY m. Anna Thoma b. 1882 d. 1943 son LELAND S. CUMMINGS b. Jan. 17, 1911 Town of Newstead, NY m. Elsie Maass GEORGE W. S. CUMMINGS is the one we suspect may have participated in the civil war, even though he would have only been 17 toward the end of the war, he is nowhere to be found in New York State during the 1862-1869 time period. If there is anyone that knows how to find out if someone was involved in the civil war, I would appreciate it if you could let me know. I was, as I mentioned, very impressed with the amount of information and very impressed with the willingness of the staff to assist with every type of question asked. I had trouble more than once and was greeted with a query of assistance almost before the question was asked. I commend the staff and your wife for a job well done! Also, I wanted to post some new info I found in my search: ISSAC CUMMINGS b. ca 1601 ENGLAND wife unknown 1) JOHN CUMMINGS b. 1630 d. I have traced my husbands CUMMINGS line back to 1797 GEORGE CUMMINGS born in Massachusetts. GEORGE CUMMINGS b. 1797 Mass. m. Thana McKoon (Malcomb) b. Oct. 7, 1801 d. Aug. 1, 1865 d. Oct. 23, 1882 JAMES M. CUMMINGS b. Jan. 9, 1825 Newstead/Akron, NY m. Marena Ransom b. 1824 d. 1908 d. 1895 many other children James had a son GEORGE WINFIELD CUMMINGS born in 1847. He served in the Civil War and then married twice. First wife was MARGARET CHAPPIUS (pronounced Sheppard and sometimes spelled that way!) His second wife was JULIA L. WHITE. By the first marriage, JASON RANSOM CUMMINGS married ANNA E. THOMA. They had my husbands grandfather. I have more info before the first GEORGE CUMMINGS, but it came from another family member and has NOT been verified. I have found no reason to doubt any of the info though, since I have been able to verify all the other info she gave. She has listed in the info she gave me, a JOHN CUMMINGS b. 1630 and d. Dec. 1, 1700. He married SARAH HOWLETT and had among other children, another JOHN CUMMINGS b. 1657 in Boxford, Mass.. I'm not sure of this info and would like to exchange info with you to see if there might be a connection somewhere. I will be glad to send what I have if you will post an address. Hope to hear from you soon. Regards, Annette Christensen 332 Goodburlet Road Henrietta, New York 14467 --- Maximus-CBCS v1.02 * Origin: Flower City Central, Rochester, NY (1:260/204) I'm fairly certain that your THOMAS CUMMINGS will go back to ISAAC CUMMINGS b. 1601 d. 1677. There are several books written following several lines up to the early 1900's. One of them is "Cummings Genealogy - ISAAC CUMMINGS 1601-1677 Of Ipswich in 1638 And some of his Descendants" by Albert Oren Cummins publ. 1904. Another is "Isaac Cummings of Topsfield, Mass., and some of his Descendants." by Clark, Towne, Cummings, and Dow. This book has some interesting information concerning the traditions and the inventory of Isaac Cummings' house after his death. If you are a member of the New England Historic Genealogical Society, you can get both these books and a couple others on loan through the mail. I will be glad to look through the info I copied for THOMAS and the other names. I'm not sure I'll have them, though, since I foolishly copied only those pages that directly connected to my husbands CUMMINGS. I am saving my pennies to buy a copy of the CUMMINGS Genealogy from the NEHGS ($78). I will send what I find as soon as I can. At the very least, I can send some background info on the name and some traditions. Till then, good luck and thanks for the shout! Annette Christensen 332 Goodburlet Rd.
