CRANE FAMILY by Elsie Savell Tue Apr 28 1992 ------------------------------- I see any on CRANES. Ellery Bicknell CRANE had a bit of trouble tracking CRANES who had headed out to new lands unless someone just happened to write him a family line for his book. If you have found other documentation, I would crawl over broken glass to see some of it. I am Elsie Crane Savell, 6605 Millwood Road, Bethesda MD 20817-6057; Ph. 301-229-1806. I am willing to send a check for copying or a SASE any size or share my findings or whatever you prefer. Going on preponderance of the evidence, as they say, it looks as if our Southern CRANE/CRAINS came from one of the NJ lines, but all that could be knocked into a cocked hat if we find evidence of a ship bringing venturesome CRANES from Henry-of-Milton, Mass. We do know of two brothers, desc. from John and Abijah CRANE of the Boston Tea Party, who did exactly that. I am in touch with Robert DENSON of Madison, FL--near Valdosta, GA--who has beautiful evidence of his descent from that line. Right now, I am tracking an Edward CRANE who died in Cecil Co, MD around 1703. That is the NE corner of MD, near Delaware, Philadelphia, and NJ!!! If he turns out to be the deceased and not some infant mentioned in the will, he would have to have been either g-son or gg-son of Jasper or Stephen, considering those dates! Lore from elderly ladies in the South is that the Cranes came from NJ and that we should shush and not let it get about that we descend from YANKEES. Ostracism surely would have occurred in the old days. ------------------------------- Date: Fri May 22 1992 15:05:00 From: Robert Tinkle To: Richard Pence Subj: CRANE ------------------------------- RP>Norman Morris to Elsie Savell on 25 April 1992: RP> > I have a lot of information on the CRANE line my wife's maiden name RP> > is Crane and she goes back to Jasper Crane. Sorry I can not give you anything substantial in return. If that is so about John WATERMAN's being born in England ca 1800, he is a later arrival than the WATERMANs who were closely connected in the 1600's to the CRANEs in Windsor, CT. (Eeek. I called it Windham in recent notes. Will they ever forgive me?) I would speculate that your WATERMANs were related to this bunch back in England if you can find some records. If you become interested in the Connecticut family, look at the church records in old Windsor. Here is the concrete connection to the CRANES, probably not my line: Silas CRANE, fourth generation down from Benjamin CRANE, the progenitor, was born 19 April 1723, and his mother was Mary HIBARD. He married Lucy WATERMAN 20 Sept. 1742 in Norwich, CT and their children were Silas CRANE b 4 Sept 1743, Chloe b 24 Sept 1745--married James Noble SHANNON, son of Cutt SHANNON and adopted son of Jamor James NOBLE of Boston, Mass. Chloe had previously married Samuel CONOVER but had left no issue although they adopted James Noble, a son of Thomas, a brother of her last husband. Next child of Silas and Lucy (WATERMAN) CRANE was Jonathan b 1750 in Lebanon, CT. Then Theodorey b 1752 or 3 who married Alpheus MORSE, Esq. Then Elijah CRANE and Waterman and Hibard CRANE, whose dates we do not know. This from page 43, _Genealogy of the CRANE Family_ Vol. 2, by Ellery BICKNELL CRANE, 1900, photoduplicated by NEHGS in Boston, MA. Cindy, my second cousin once removed lives not far from you--Debbie (HARRIS), wife of Marshall KERR on Summit Court in Niceville. Thought I would mention it just in case you knew each other. I hope real WATERMAN scholars saw your excellent note. Oh--Lucy WATERMAN CRANE died in Natchez MS around 1787 or 8.
