Ryan,ed., Champaign, IL 1957. It appears that Teunis, the original American COVERT, had 2 great grandsons named Luke descending from his son Lucas, and from Lucas' sons Lucas (Jr.) and Tunis. Here's what they have on the 2 Lukes: 1-Teunis Janse COVERT (emigrated from Heemstede, -sp Barbara LUCAS 2-Lucas Teunis COVERT, b. Holland (emigrated with parents from Holland in 1651). Living at Bedford in Brooklyn 1n 1697 and at Three Mile Run, Somerset County, NJ in 1704. -sp Barbara SPRONG (daughter of Jan SPRONG, a soldier from Bon and Anna SONELAERS who were married in Bergen,Norway, Oct. 23,1660. 3- Lucas COVERT, bap. Apr. 9,1699, Brooklyn. Resided Three Mile Run, Somerset County, NY [the source is inconsistent as to whether this town is in NY or NJ]. -sp1 Femmetje _________ lived in Essex County [NJ?] d. 'The derivation of the Covert seems to be uncertain. It was spelled in various ways at the time of the Dutch settlement in New Amsterdam--such as Coevors, Coevers, Couverts, and Covrir. The latter, Covrir, is an old French word and leads to the belief that the family had its origin in France. Many Coverts believe they were French Huguenots driven from France by persecution.' I also have some COVERTS in my ancestry, from Seneca Co. NY. On a recent trip, I stopped at my hometown library near there and found a newly published (1989) COVERT genealogy that seems very well done. It mostly deals with Seneca Co. COVERTS, but also has information on the early generations. I don't have ready access to the book, so I suggest contacting the publisher: Interlaken Historical Society, P.O. NY that was known as Lumberland. This area was in the rolling Catskill Mountains and was suited for agriculture and lumbering. The area had boarding houses and taverns as well as farms to support the lumbering. The Coverts were farmers. Her father, William Covert, was born c. 1793 in NY State. He probably had 5-10 children of which I can identify the following: James b. c. 1820 Harriette b. c. 1833 Andrew b. c. 1835 George b. c. 1837 Her mother was named Anna and was born c. 1798 in NY State. She married George CLARK c. 1850. George was born c. 1823 in NY State. They had 9 children from among the following: Mary J. b. c. 1851 Ella b. c. 1851/1854 Martin Dominick b. c. 1852 Martin C. b. c. 1853 M. L. b. c. 1853 Mary F. b. c. 1859 Clarrissa b. c. 1860 Clerig (Sergint) b. c. 1860 G. B. b. c. 1861 Clara b. c. ? John b. c. ? There are more than 9 children listed but probably some are duplicates or died since this is being compiled from several sources. In any case, they were farmers in an area known as Highland/Elred NY in Sullivan Co. In 1860, their farm was also home to Samuel Clark, 78, who was blind. Samuel could have been George's father or uncle and was born c.1782 in NY State. The Civil War occurred 1861 to 1865. Harriette was my g-g-grandmother on my mother's side. Joseph A. It's called "The COVERT Family", by Carl Fischer, William Covert, and Maurice Patterson; published by The Interlaken Historical Society, P.O. Box 323, Interlaken, NY 14847, in 1989. I only copied out the information on my family, which came to Seneca Co. NY pretty early, so I don't have anything on your person. I think the book has a lot on the Seneca Co. Coverts, but also does cover the early generations; I've seen Basset's notes mentioned in their sources, but I haven't seen that myself, although our local library is supposed to have a copy. The furthest I have been able to trace back is William COVERT b. 18 May 1791 in Dutchess/Putnam Co. NY who married Anna RYDER (REIDER) m. 07 Nov 1814, who was born 07 Apr 1798 in Orange Co. NY. They settled in Lumberland, Sullivan Co. NY in 1825 and according to the NY 1855 Census, owned their own farm valued at $350.00 William's father was named James. This fact gets me back to the 1750-1775 era for James' birth. During my research, I have looked at Basset's study plus church records, census records, NY Genealogical and and Biographical Record, etc and found that there is a LOT of information on COVERT available. I'm sure everyone researching this name has gone the same route to varing degrees. Has anyone put it ALL together. Now that we have computers, we should be able to enter everything that everybody has in one big GEDCOM or Genealogy program and share this with the everyone else. Am I being naive? Is this in process? Is LDS researching this name? I have about 100 descendants of William COVERT and would like to trade my family group print out for yours.
