There is not much in Collins Center, but in Collins I found their Free Library. There were three books in the library; two on the history of Erie County and one on the history of the Town of Collins, of which both villages reside within. I won't belabor the book titles here, but I have them available if necessary. What follows is all that I found in the books. The first settlers arrived in the Collins area in 1809. Some of them arrived on foot from Danby, Vermont. The area was first in Concord Township. The very first settlers were in Taylor's Hollow, named after the first of the first. This is who the Collins residents know the most about. However, Collins itself was named by Turner Adrich when it was formed from Concord on 16 Mar 1821. Aldrich arrive in the spring or summer of 1810. He brought his family up the Cattaraugus Creek from the lake beach. He chose the name from his wife's maiden name. His wife was Nancy COLLINS... and that's all the books provide on that subject. I was able to obtain the name of the town historian. She is Irvine GAFFNEY. Her address is Orchard Place Town, Collins, NY 14034. Her phone number is 532-5380. She's active in her work because she comes to the library by appointment. BTW, there were four other COLLINS in Erie County in 1898, none ever in Collins. They were Edward COLLINS, John C. COLLINS, James K. COLLINS, and Nathen C. COLLINS. Nathen came the closest by being born in Springville (about 10 miles away) on 25 Sep 1838, but then he moved to Colden which is closer to Buffalo. Hope this helps. Give me a yell for anything else. The dBase will include COLLINS surnames from Massachusetts to Florida, and some of these families that migrated westward into Ohio, Illinois, Kentucky, West Virginia, etc. Most info. have original resources quoted with names. There will also be a section with COLLINS surnames from Overseas (Mostly England and Ireland). Since I have just started this dBase I can't really say when most of the info. will be inputed, but I have estimated it will take 2-4 months. Alot of info. has been gathered over the years from alot of people and resources. So, please bear with me. I also have started a COLLINS Rolodex which will corresponde briefly with the dBase. Anyone wishing to add their info. to the COLLINS dBase and/or Rolodex can do the following: Collins dBase: 1). If Possible please list First Names of your COLLINS ancestors. 2). Include a Birth, Death or Marriage Date with each COLLINS name (s). Also, list a place of B, D, or M (county &/or State). 3). If you have a resource to go with the COLLINS name (s), please list them as well. Collins Rolodex: 1). List in brief a little about the COLLINS Ancestor you are researching. 2). List a birth, death and/or marriage date and place. 3). Include your name and home address. **Note: If you are sending in for the Collins dBase, also include your name and address, and it will automatically be entered into the Rolodex. Rolodex Example: Eli COLLINS, d: 1831, Worcester Co., MD; m: Charity SMITH, 1792, Sussex Co., DE. Your name and address. I am using a dBase 3 plus program, the format I have set up is as follows: SURNAME: 15 characters GIVEN: 13 characters EVENT: 13 characters LOCAL: 30 characters SOURCE: 5 characters (For my purpose only to locate in my files). If you have any questions about this dBase, let me know. I will let you know in the next several months as to my progress with the the dBase entries. --- þ SMRead 3.0 #? ¯ --- SFScan/286 v1.00a * Origin: HACKER'S BBS - NEW CASTLE, DE. (1:150/145.0)
