If your COFFIN line is from Guilford County, NC, there is a 99% probability they are Quakers. If this is the case, there is a wealth of information in the Quaker genealogy books. Check for COFFINs in New Hampshire and Nantucket Island from the early 1600s up to about 1711. That is where they were before they migrated all the way down to Guilford County, NC. In the mid 1800s, many of them went on to IN. While I don't have any COFFIN blood in me, I must have seen many hundred of them in my tracing of the HUSSEY Quaker line from Surry, England, to Hampton, NH, to Nantucket, MA, to Guilford, NC, to Hendricks, IN. Since I made my HUSSEY/Quaker connection about four months ago, I have increased the size of my database by well over 50% (from just over 2000 to nearly 3500). There is a series of books by Wade Hinshaw published in the 20s and 30s entitled The Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy. Volume I, North Carolina, has just been republished (see back page of Genealogical Helper) and I understand the one for PA/NJ is also out again. ($77.50 each) In the various libraries around San Diego, I have seen those two plus ones for IN, NY, and OH. The Quakers had a system of recording weekly, monthly, and yearly activity at their meeting houses. They also recorded who was accepted and from where they were accepted, who was granted a certificate to leave and to where, births, marriages, and deaths. Wade Hinshaw transcribed many of these records and published his tomes (the NC and PA/NJ are about 1,200 pages each). I'll be out of town for about ten days. If you haven't found anything in a couple weeks, message me and I can help you get started with what I have (the NC volume). Also, check the current copy of Genealogical Helper. I am sure I saw a COFFIN family association listed there in the annual listing of associations. -=[ Roy in San Diego ]=- -=[ Prodigy DWHW06A - GEnie R.LEGGITT1 ]=- ========================================================= The Coffin Family as they relate to the Pearson, Harris and Bamford families of Essex County Mass. It was very exciting! I was able to go back to Nicholas Coffin, will dated Sep 12, 1613 and proved Nov 3, 1613 (What does proved mean anyway?) He is the grandfather to the emmigrant Tristram Coffin b. 1605/1609 d. Oct. 2, 1681 and married Dionis Stevens. I am a descendant of Mary Coffin, Tristram's daughter. I do not know Joanna Thember's parent's names. Are you able to go back further than that on either line? Does it look like I have info. you may need? Where did you find your information?
