Just ran across a copy I had made of a page of the Steuban Countiy (IN) history: "George D. Cleveland is the only living son of David H. Cleaveland, one of the pioneers of Jackson Township. David Cleveland was born in New York State, June 1, 1816. In 1835, with his elder brother, Amasa Maroe Cleveland, he came to Steuban County, Ind. He lived with his brother till his marriage, and then lived on Pretty Prairie, Lagrange County, for a time. Then lived on land he purchased when first he came to the county, on section 22, Jackson Township, where he lived until his death, August 23, 1849. He was married in November, 1837, to Eliza Littlefield, a native of New York, born February 2, 1812, daughter of Edmond and Amy Littlefield, who were the earliest settlers of that section [sic]." Before I reviewed this I had thought it probable that they married in NY before going to Indiana. That would have explained, you see, why I didn't find a record of the marriage when I spend a few days in the basement of the courthouse there in Angola. I have no other information about Eliza's origins. Come to think of it, I guess it's possible that David went to NY in '37 to marry her and bring her back to Indiana, having extablished himself there. But I still don't know where in NY. --- TBBS v2.1/NM * Origin: NGS/CIG BBS - Arlington, VA (703) 528-2612 *DHST/V.32* (109/302) 129/34 273/1
