CHENEY by Barbara Bennett Thu Apr 11 1991 ------------------------------- "The Cheney Genealogy", whose author is Charles Henry Pope, was published in 1897 (or thereabouts). Reprints are probably available from various genealogy book dealers. Check the ads in the Genealogy Helper, especially Higginson books (they usually list a couple pages of books). I can't remember the name of the company I got mine from. Mine turned out to be a bound photocopy of the original book - not quite what I expected but at $45 or so, it was a good bit cheaper than the other offerings I had seen. Kurt Laidlaw tells me that not many libraries have this book. I believe he said that the Library of Congress doesn't even have a copy. My maternal grandmother was Helen Gertrude (CHENEY) CRAWFORD. Her parents were cousins, Daniel W. CHENEY and Elizabeth Jane "Nin" CHENEY. Sarah CHENEY b. Newbury, Ma. Feb. 1637, d. Ipswich, Ma. 18 Oct 1665 m. Newbury, Ma. 23 Dec. 1652 Joseph PLUMMER. She was the dau. of John CHENEY and Margaret (__). Some sources say that the wife of John CHENEY was Martha. I have that John CHENEY d. Roxbury, Ma. Dec. 1671. That is the extent of my information on the CHENEY name. Do you have anything additional? I've been researching my surname and found it to go back to France and Ireland. Could you tell me if your CHENEY are any way connected to CHESNEY in Ireland and prior to there to CHENAY, CHESNAY in France. The surnames go back to the late 1500's. I know there are a lot of CHESNEY surnames in Ireland and I've read in a book giving the origin of Irish surnames that the CHESNEY originaly came from the northern coast of France in the 14th century. My ancesters the CHESNAYs came to Canada in the mid 1650s. I'm just wondering if there is a genealogical link somewhere in these variables of these surnames. Would love to hear what you say about this. Thanks, Ron. --- TMail v1.28 * Origin: Ottawa's Genealogical focal point 613-830-5391 HST-DS (1:243/23)
