Searching CHAPPELL Family by Joel Chappell 5 Sept 1990 ------------------------------------------------ Need help with father of Oliver Chappell, b. 29 Mar. 1752, Lebanon, CT. He is rumored to have half brothers Jonathan and Solomon. Solomon reported to have been active in affairs in CT, Jonathan moved to Otsego Co., NY as did Oliver. Reply 9 Billings St., Milford, NH 03055 or call (603)-673-6240 collect. Have info to Share on BUCKLIN (LEN) (LAND), COMAN, in VT. Also some BOONE data...My first try at this, thanks for your help......Joel Hi Jack, Just a note to let you know what a real pleasure it is to trace family roots via BBS! I'm meeting new folks every day and beginning to be able to help others out. It makes up for the times when I was utterly frustrated and unable to figure out how to get started at this effort the correct way, without spinning my wheels. I have hit a small dry spell lately and perhaps you may have some information in your records that can point me in the right direction. As I have explained before, I think, the point at which I am presently bogged down is as follows: I can clearly trace back to my 4th G. Grandfather, Oliver Chappell in Lebanon, CT from 1752 to 1813. I do not know, nor have I been able to trace, who his Father was. I am more certain than ever that his father is a descendant of George Chappell, (Mass. Bay 1634/New London, CT ca.1651) and I can now, after five years of work, trace at least 50 descendants of George in the Lebanon, CT area from around 1649 through 1820. Still I can't make the East/West connection so to speak! I have concluded Oliver's father was probably born around 1720 either in New London or Lebanon and was married twice (I have found a John Chappell that fits this pattern, but I have no information on his children, YET). I do know Oliver had two half brothers, Solomon and Jonathan. Solomon also had a son Ira that eventually settles in Cayuga Co., NY, and I think I have located some information on him. I have found, I think, the correct Solomon's marriage date in Bailey's Ancient CT Church Records. Solomon is reported to have stayed in CT and been quite a prominent man. Census Records: 1820 Solomon Chappel in Hebron, Tolland Co., CT 1822 ditto 1800 Solomon Chappell in Hartford Co., CT Also I have located land transfers and title deeds to Jonathan in Otsego Co., NY. It seems Jonathan followed his half-brother Oliver and his descendants to Otsego Co., NY. I even think I have tuned up information on Jonathan Joeleciated. Sorry to run on so, but I'm stuck, Hi.. or Solomon would --- * Origin: Legal Beagle, Nashua, NH (603)883-4466 HST (Opus 1:132/115) Also I have located land transfers and title deeds to Jonathan in Otsego Co., NY. It seems Jonathan followed his half-brother Oliver and his descendants to Otsego Co., NY. I even think I have tuned up information on Jonathan Jr. returning to Connecticutto marry a Sibble Knowles in CHATHAM, CT. This is where you come in Jack; where is CHATHAM CT???? I can't find it anywhere! I have decided the best way to locate Oliver's father is through his half-brothers, and I have two times come across this Chatham (yes I'm sure its CT). B.T.W. Bailey's book says Solomon Chappell from Chatham, m. Abigail Bell, 27 Nov 1782 in Glastonbury. Perhaps Chatham was a community near Hebron, Lebanon, and Salem ? Any light you can shed on Chatham, Oliver, Jonathan, or Solomon would be most appreciated. Ponder this; I am convinced more than ever of the following...... Jonathan CHAPPELL (3), [Caleb 2, George 1], married as we know Ruth HUTCINSON. They settled in Hebron, CT and had; Abigail b. 4 Oct. 1724 m. William Peters* Ruth b. 26 Jan. 1725/6 m. James White Rachel b. 24 May 1728 Mary b. 18 March 1730 Deborah b. 2 Feb. 1735/6 d. 30 Oct. 1739 David b. ? d. 8 Nov. 1739 son b. 11 Apr. 1740 d. same day All of these are *incorrectly* recorded in the Hebron Town Records and the IGI under the name CHAPWELL! Abigail (4) married 2nd Eleazer Strong. Notice the gap between Racel and Mary as well as between Mary and Deborah. This Jonathan *did* have a son Jonathan (4) as there is a record in the Hebron Deeds [Bk. 5, page 263] showing Jonathan selling to son, Jonathan...13 Oct 1767. I am convinced this is the Jonathan (the son) that marries Remember PERRY 15 June 1758 (NEHGR says 1753, Bailey's says 1758). I also feel strongly that this is a second marriage and the marriage of Jonathan Chappell and Lucy TENNANT (1750 in Colchester) is a first marriage for son Jonathan and not a second marriage of his father. This would fit perfectly for Jonathan (4) to be the father of Oliver, Solomon, Jonathan, and Lucy. Jonathan (4) did have a daughter Ruth (another name in my line) b. 9 Oct. 1759, who married David SKINNER. I also feel this Jonathan (4) was the Jonathan listed in Chatham in the 1790 census. All signs point to Chatham for me and I hope to be down ther digging in early August. It would be nice if some of the PERRY, TENNANT, SKINNER readers out ther could chime in and add some substance to all of this. Attr: GENEALOGY ------------------------------- OK.......Now if you are following this line of thought, I think Lucy TENNANT is the mother of Oliver CHAPPELL and Remember PERRY is the mother of Solomon, Jonathan, and Lucy. Solomon was from Chatham at the time of his marriage to Abigail BELL. His brother Jonathan returns to (you guessed it) Chatham from Otsego Co., NY to marry Sibble KNOWLES [NEHGR Vol. 80] ca. 1818. Care to guess where Oliver CHAPPELL's second daughter Polly marries David WILCOX? I think the deed in the Lebanon Records that names Oliver "formerly of Lebanon, now residing in Glastonbury" really meant Chatham. He may have been living there at the time of his return to Lebanon with either his father Jonathan or half-brother Solomon. Chatham is now Portland and East Hampton. I plan to go down there (after calling the CSG) and see if I can locate the land records and probates. Barbour does not say much about Chatham, not sure where the vitals are. I know the KNOWLES clan was from Chatham and suspect the WILCOXs were as well. Once again, it would be nice if the KNOWLES and WILCOX clan would chime in with some help. I must question the information you list re: Abigail (4) who you say was born on 4 Oct 1724 and "...married 2nd Eleazer Strong." There were two Eleazer STRONGs in Hebron -- Eleazer Sr. and Eleazer Jr. Eleazer STRONG Sr. m. 23 Nov 1720, Jemima STILES. Nine children were born to this marriage between the the years 1723 and 1745. One of the children was Eleazer Jr. who was born 27 Dec. 1729. Eleazer STRONG, Jr. married in 1748, Abigail CHAPPEL b. 1731 (daughter of Noah CHAPPELL of Hebron and Abigail HOWARD who were married 16 Oct 1726. Eleazer STRONG, Jr. died at age 92. His wife died at age 75. They had eight children in Hebron including Abigail STRONG (2nd) b. 1752 who married Nehemiah PORTER of Hebron. Eleazer Strong, Sr. died in 1780. His wife, Jemima STILES Chappell died in 1787. He could not have married an Abigail CHAPPELL, dtr of Jonathan and Ruth. Eleazer STRONG Jr. lived until 1821. Note the date, I think this rules out Eleazer Jr. I will dig up the ref. numbers for the IGI listing on the Chapwells if you want, but moreover the listing *is* in the Hebron vitals which is a much better source than the IGI. I have found mistakes on Chappell genealogy in the IGI that are almost equal to the ones in the DAR Lineage Books. The elder Jonathan is the son of Caleb Chappell, Lt. The elder Jonatan's two eldist children are Rachel and Abigail for sure. Perhaps we have more than two Eleazer Strongs running around the area at the time.
