For Jemima's birth and ancestry, I'm indebted to Massachusetts vital records, as extracted in the IGI and spot-checked against the published volumes; and to Gilbert Warren Chapin, "The Chapin Book of Genealogical Data, With Brief Biographical Sketches, of the Descendants of Deacon Samuel Chapin," 2 volumes (Hartford, CT: The Chapin Family Association, 1924). I have a little problem with the Lucy WHITNEY who was the wife of Thaddeus CHAPIN, since there seems to be a discrepancy between the Massachusetts vital records and the Chapin book. When I return to checking this line against primary sources, I'll be sure to investigate this apparent discrepancy further. Another item I look forward to researching is an entry in the 1844 directory of Worcester, MA, which lists Mrs. Jemima COES as a nurse. This might (or might not!) provide an interesting glimpse into the early history of modern nursing in the U.S. At the Renaissance Festival held near Baltimore/Annapolis each year, I "borrow" the name of Cicely PENNY just because it sounds so nice. I do hope she doesn't mind! ...
