BURT by Cheryl Edwards Mon May 27 1991 ------------------------------- I have an ELIZABETH BURT that married SAMUEL WRIGHT. My line comes down through their son BENJAMIN, who married THANKFUL TAYLOR. I do not have any information on any of the spouses for the children of ELIZABETH and SAMUEL. Except of course, BENJAMIN. My sources were: The Genealogical Dictionary of the First Settlers of New England. The History of Ryegate, VT, by Miller and Wells. The Wright Family Genealogies, by Andrews, Alfred, and Stokes. And the History of Northampton, by Taumbell. If U are interested in my line back to Henry Burt & Eulalia Marche post UR address on the BB or regular mail and I'll send a copy. Sarah Burt first m 22 apr 1675 to Benjamin Dorchester. She next m Luke Hitchcock 14 Feb 1677. Supposedly they had 11 children, which I do not have. She d 9 Nov 1746. I have nothing more on this family unit & would appreciate anything U may be able to offer. Also need Luke's progenitors. Benjamin I was the town's first blacksmith, having been invited to Ridgefield from Norwalk in 1712, soon after the town's founding. Seaborn Burt became a miller, operating one of the town's primary grist mills. His widow, Susanna Burt, remained here during and after the war, though her son fled. Theophilus Burt, another son, also went to Canada, but Theophilus came back, petitioning the state for return of the land it had confiscated from him during the war. The Burts were a major family in the early settlement of Ridgefield, and Burts remained in this town until the present era. I am not sure there are any left today, but I have known Burts who lived here and descended from Benjamin I. I am not a Burt but have researched and written a lot about Ridgefield history, and thus have gotten into Burts. I have vitals on them, and some lore, and material I wrote on aspects of their involvement in the town's early history.
