BERRY by Sandy Clunies 05 March 1990 ------------------------------------------------ Although New Hampshire was not a state until post 1775 - it was a separate province in the 1600's. The BERRY family was of Rye, NH rather than Essex County, MA. Noyes,Libby,Davis' "Gen. Dict. of ME & NH" (which would really be an excellent addition to your home library with all your early colonial NH families) states little is known of this family. William BERRY was in Strawberry Bank by 1636, sold land there 1648, bought land at Sandy Beach same year. This is the little stretch of seacoast of which NH is proud - just 20 miles long - and many folks forget that NH does have seacoast! [BTW, it's a political hot potato there right now, with protests against the Seabrook nuclear power plant recently approved to open there]. William's wife Jane (no maiden name known) was granted adm. on his estate 28 June 1654. She m. 2) Nathaniel DRAKE (I'm also of that family). She claimed she was age 67 in 1686, which gives her a birthdate of c.1619. There were several other early BERRY families in ME & NH, apparently unrelated to William and Jane BERRY. I did not include a BERRY family group sheet in the package mailed today, but will do so later, if you need it. I plan to include this area in either my May or October trips to New England. Did visit the Lane Library in Hampton in 1988 for my many families there, but did not expand it at that time for the rest of the coastal NH area (Portsmouth, Rye, etc.). When I was a teenager in MA, there was an aging amusement park in Rye Beach NH that we used to visit. Sarah Lane (daughter of William) 12-21-1721. Sarah d. 1-3-1776. William Berry b. cir. 1653, d. bet. 1704-1708, m. Judith Locke (daughter of Nathaniel Locke and Judith Hermins) on 7-8-1678. She m. 2nd Nathaniel Huggins in 1708. 8 children. William Berry b. cir. 1610 England, d. cir 1654 Rye, NH, m. Jane ?, b. 1619, d. aft. 1686, m. 2nd Nathaniel Drake. 7 children. William Berry III is the 1st cousin, twice removed of Elizabeth Berry who married Jeremiah Pote, a brother of my husband's ancestor Gamaliel Pote. My sources for the Berry information are: Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire, Sybil Noyes et al. Old Kittery [ME] and Her Families, Everett S.
