BENNETT by Jim Stevens et al Tue Oct 08 1991 ------------------------------- I have a couple of Bennetts in my line that are giving me fits. Josephine BENNETT b. 1852 m. Andrew LITTLEHALE b. 1843 They lived in N. Oxford county Maine. Around Magalloway and Lincoln Plantations. I can't find anything else about her background. I know a John BENNETT moved into the area from Gilead in 1824. He had six sons, Frederick, Peter, Gilman, John, David, and Ransom. I know only the three survived to old age and the father John Sr returned to Gilead later in life. This data is from "Pioneers of the Magalloway from 1820 to 1904" pub in 1918. Written by Granville P. WILSON. I can't find any link between Josephine and the other BENNETTS but am sure they are related. Any assistance would be appreciated. I was not able to identify your line of Bennetts in Mrs. Minium's book. However, the names are very similar. You might write or call her and talk with her personally. When I bought my book she was almost out. "Bennetts on the Bias" Volume 1 bu Muriel Bennett Minium, published by Gateway Press, Inc., 1990. Address 885 Loma St, #3, Redding, CA 96003. Her book deals with a line of Bennetts from John-Thomas who came to the new world early 1600's, through Richard Sr. & Richard Jr. of Surry, Isle of Wight. It has many of the descendents of these lines on into N.C. and other states. See my message to James Davis for info on the book. ========================= Sat Oct 05 1991 10:53:47 by Lynn Parham Bennetts ------------------------- Mrs. Minium's Bennett book is very interesting. If I read her lineage correctly, she shows that Thomas & Ann Bennett of Clapcot, near Wallingford, Berks. was the parents of John and Richard. John came to America ca 1609 and his son Thomas, b. 1580 came in 1618 at the age of 38. One of his daughters (Mary) age 18 came in 1622. This is new stuff to us. This means that Thomas had a family in England before he came to the New World and Married Anne Pierce. Our Richard Bennett Sr. was part of his second family. She has Richard Bennett Sr. being born in 1645 in Surry (page 102). However, she also has his mother Anne dieing in 1641(page 106). I hope she can clarify this. I found a couple of other mistakes. In the will of Sarah Lancaster she omits the will's reference to Sarah Mangum, daughter of John. (She does mention Mary) On page 87 she calls Richard Bennett Sr. nephew of Edward Bennett when actually he would have been a 1st cousin once removed. I am in the process of re-evaluating the Bennett-Mangum connection. Will let you know if I come up with anything. Oh, I almost forgot. Richard above, son of Thomas and Ann Bennett of Clapcot had three sons that came to America. They were Robert, Richard and Edward of the "Bennetts Welcome" plantation. This would make our Thomas 1st cousins to them. ================================= Date: Sat Oct 26 1991 15:22:39 From: John Palmer To: Barbara Bennett Subj: BENNETTS of US & England ------------------------------- Barbara, you may have seen some of the messages on this board recently concerning an excellent book, "Bennets on the Bias," vol ! by Muriel Bennett Minium. She has done a marvelous job of researching the line of Thomas and Ann Bennet of Clapcot, near Wallingford, Berks., England. Their children include Richard of Clapcot who m Elizabeth Tisdale, dau of Thomas Tisdale; Sir Thomas Bennet, Sheriff of London, 15694 and Lord May, 1603-04 who m Mary Taylor, dau of Robert Taylor, John Bennet, Anna Bennet m William Duncombe; and Margaret Bennet m Sir George Croke. She identified this line as the Bennets of Chillingham Castle through an old English Pedigree. She believes that the John Bennett, came to America on one of the emigrant ships. John had nephews Edward, Richard, and Robert who established "Bennets Welcome" on Isle of Wight Co. I thought you would want to know about Muriel Bennett Minium and her work. Her book weaves in a tremendous amount of English and American history to help the reader under the time in which these folk lived. I spoke with Muriel this AM land she would welcome hearing from you via snail mail as he is not on an electronic board. He is planning a second volume to her book and is starting a Bennett newsletter. Her address is 885 Loma Street, Apt 3, Redding CA, 9600303629 and would welcome having your line of Bennetts and whatever you may know about where when your Bennets came from. Muriel is a lovely person who had devoted years of her life to researching the Bennett line. Thanks for all the work you do for the rest of us involved with genealogy and the Echo.
