He was born in Oxford MA Aug 11 1774. He moved with his father and mother and their effects here on an ox shed and after a tedious journey for 9 days arrived at the house of John Burton in the eastern part of the town where he left his parents for a short time. He purchased 100 acres of land in the northwest part of the town, where, after clearing a few acres, he erected a house. In 1798, he married Lydia Washer, a native of Amherst NH born in 1770. Here on this farm they shared the hardships and privations incident to pioneer life, and in this house all their children were born. In 1814, soon after the organization of the Methodist society, consisting of members in Andover and Ludlow, to the number of about 20. Mr Barton and wife joined the society Joseph Manning was then class-leader. In 1816 during the month of Dec. there was a severe during northern snow storm on a Sabbath day. Mr. Barton had previously erected and partly prepared a log barn, but he had not put the stanches into the stable and his cattle being exposed to the inclemency of the storm, he stayed at home and drove down stakes in his barn to which to tie his cattle and drove them in for the night, instead of attending meeting at Brothers Manning's in the absence of the preacher, conducted by Manning. The following morning, Mr. Manning called on Mr. Barton and demanded the cause of his absence from meeting, Mr Barton said "he considered it his duty to remain at home and shelter his cattle from the storm Mr. Manning replied "than you have regard for your cattle, than you have for the worship of God Almighty and you shall be expelled from the society for wilfully neglecting to attend meeting and for labor on the Sabbath" Mr Barton responded that he considered it necessary labor and would do the same again under similar circumstances' Mr. Manning with characteristic pertinacity said, 'you shall be expelled from the society for your provoking continually. So the 2 contended' Alsa! for poor human nature, Mr Manning the appealed to Mrs. Barton, expecting when would condemn her husband; strange enough to the stout disciplinarian, she, but justified him the next Sunday, the young circuit preacher was there, who always put up at Bro. Manning's and the case and confession, to state that he was sorry, and that in no case would he ever work again on the Sabbath, Mr. Barton explained the matter, stated he was sorry it happened and that he would endeaver in future to avoid labor on the Sabbath but to pledge himself farther, could not as if the same thing should happen again, he shld drive down his stancheland tie up his cattle, out of the storm, for he read in his Bible that "the merciful man is merciful to his beast" The exportulation of Manning adn the Preacher with Barton grew hot, all 3 grew hot and the firmness of Barton only increased the vote was called to expel Barton to be taken by rising only Manning apposed. Manning and the minister chafed, but laid the discipline over till the next visit of the preacher in 2 weeks. The Methodist class numbered about 20 memmbers, in so strong a Baptist town has grealty flourished up to this time Hotter and heavier came on the church storm at the next meeting, the sermon was on the sancitity of the Sabbath and the exhortation of preacher and class-leader on the imperitive duty of the class to maintian the honor of the Sabbath; again the 'rising' vote, was called, the preacher stood up, Manning stood up, 2 of the sisters stood up. The hot-headed young preacher enraged called for all opposed to the expulsion to arise; every man in the class except the leader stood up and a majority of the women. There was a bright fire blazing on the hearth, the preacher turned and threw the class-pater with names into it, and said this class is broken up and it seems in fact it was for never has the Methodist church flourish in Andover since to this day. Barton was liked by his townsmen much better than Manning and the sympathy of nearly all was with his at first, but after a time he grew too bitter for the relish of many against both Armenism and Calvinsism. He was a man of clear and vigorous mind, was quick of perception, keen in a reporter and a ready debater, passionately fond of religious disputation; he would often argue against his owns convictions of truth, merely to test the skill and ingenuity of this opponent in debate but those, who knew him best never doubted his belief in Christianity in 1818 he removed with his family to Ludlow where he died July 31 1833 aged 59 yrs. His wife died May 22, 1851 aged 81 years. !gravestone Ludlow VT ==================== Dear Mr. Barton Above is a story from the History of Andover VT.
