JOSIAH BARTLETT by Sandy Clunies Tue Nov 05 1991 ------------------------------- Josiah BARTLETT is a collateral cousin of mine through his WEBSTER ancestry. So I have ahnentafel information on him (i.e., his direct parents/grandparents on this one line. But no details on full family groups, siblings and spouses, etc. John WEBSTER John EMERY Mary SHATSWELL Alice GRANTHAM | | Mary WEBSTER mar. My paternal grandparents, Francis Joseph Barolet and Henrietta Margaret Roche were born in Canada somewhat north of Montreal and migrated to Massachusetts via New York State. Their transition through upper New York State was apparently in the 1860s as some of their children were born in Massachusetts starting about 1870. They took the name BARTLETT in Massachusetts, either voluntarily or involuntarily (Since Francis was listed as unable to read or write and was a laborer it is possible that the census taker used the name BARTLETT when he heard the name BAROLET in French). They were a French-speaking family in Worcester County, Massachusetts, where my father was born in 1876. I don't know how he retained the name BAROLET but I'm glad he did. He was child number ten of thirteen and apparently one of the better-educated offspring and the most successful adults in later life. I wonder if the BARTLETTs you are researching were in Massachusetts, had come from Quebec, and if we are remotely related. According to The Society of the Descendants of Robert BARTLETT of Plymouth, Massachusettes, Inc. (of which I am a member), there were TWO Bartlett lines to originally settle in the New World. Robert Bartlett, who married Mary WARREN (of the Mayflower), cannot be identified as to origin, but the Mayflower Society has gone so far as to say he MAY be the Robert BARTLETT who was baptised in Puddletown, Dorset Co., England. The other BARTLETTs (I believe) come from Richart BARTLETT, who arrived in Newbury on the "Mary and John" in 1635. Theirs is the line which can be traced back through Stopham, England, to William the Conqueror. I have a copy of a BARTLETT (or BARTELLOT) family history (unrelated to my line) which traces some of the descendants of Richard BARTLETT. I can send you a copy if you're interested. Mr. Sidney K. Smart, PO Box 9053, Incline Village, NV 89450, has been compiling BARTLETT info (both lines) for quite some time, to the best of my knowledge he is not "computerized" but keeps his info on 3x5 cards. He has a wealth of information. My great grandfather, Rev. William Porter Bartlett, was the second president of the Bartlett Society. His/my line is from Robert BARTLETT/Mary WARREN: (1)Robert (2)Benjamin (3)Samuel (4)Samuel (5)Judah (6)Nathaniel (7)Samuel III (8)William P. (9)Persis (10)Harold ROBINSON (11)Larry (me!) I'm sure most of this info about BARTLETTs you already had, being a BARTLETT yourself! So, which line do you tie in to, and are we cousins? - Larry Robinson, 7159 Calais Pl., Newark, CA 94560 --- QuickBBS 2.75 * Origin: Copyright 1992, The CLUBHOUSE BBS, Hayward Chapter (1:215/33) Date: Fri Jul 17 1992 09:35:01 From: Roger Bartlett To: Larry Robinson, 215/33 Subj: Bartlett Attr: GENEALOGY ------------------------------- Larry--Thanks for your interesting message of July 14. I hope you get this reply; I'm new at FidoNet and am not sure I'm doing this correctly. We are certain about my Bartlett line back six generations as it is taken from a bible of my g-g-g-grandparents. Here's that portion of my line, in reverse chronological order: Roger Alan Bartlett (me), b AR 1944, m Susannah Mills Roger Frost Bartlett, Jr., b TX 1912, d TX 1979, m Dorothy Loop Roger Frost Bartlett, Sr., b TX 1886, d TX 1942, m Anna Fortson Jesse Marshall Bartlett, b TX 1841, d TX 1922, m Mary Hester Clopton Joseph Callaway Bartlett, b TN 1814, d TX 1888, m Amanda Monroe Estes Jesse Bartlett, b TN 1791, d TX 1838, m Frances Callaway Nicholas Bartlett, b MD 1742, d 1814, m Mary Martin Before Nicholas is murky. I have a book, "Pearce, Bartlett, Matthews, Smart, and Allied Families Compiled by James Alonzo Matthews, Jr.," published 1983 by Lucille Pearce, that contains some history that's a bit confusing. It seems to trace back from Nicholas (b 1742) thus: William, b 1710, m Margaret ---- Thomas, b DE 1670, d MD 1739, m Margaret Thompson Nicholas, b Sussex 1642, m Lucy Latimer Thus according to this book, our imigrant ancestor was Nicholas (b 1642). The book then traces from him back to Adam Barttelot, who supposedly got the Stopham estate for service with William the Conqueror at Hastings. The book talks about Robert Bartlett, b Sussex 1607, who came over on the Anne in 1623 and married Mary, daughter of Richard Warren, and at first I thought Robert was supposed to be in my direct line. It isn't clear, but it appears from the book that that isn't the case and that the discussion of Robert, like that of Josiah the Signer (also in the book), was thrown in for the heck of it. Does any of this make any sense to you? Can you clarify any of it for me? Do you know of any family histories relating to my line? Would you like any part of the Matthews book copied? (Tell you what--first I'll search it to see if I can spot anything that seems to relate to your line and get back in touch with you about my results. It'll be a few days, because I'm going to be out of town this weekend. Also, I'm not sure I'm going to succeed reaching you on FidoNet, since I'm still in my childhood as to computers and my infancy as to FidoNet. I'll probably write you if anything good turns up.) I see you're from the San Francisco area. I expect to be there for about a week in late July and early August. I was stationed at Moffett Field in 1971-72 and lived in Mountain View. Good luck.
