Banks, it states that: Richard AREY, b. abt. 1640; he resided in Edgartown, and married Sarah MARCHANT abt. 1677. Richard died 14 Feb 1688-9. Children: 1. John, b 3 Oct 1677 2. Jean, b. 1679; m. Benjamin PEASE 17 June 1697 3. Richard, b. 3 July 1682 4. Samuel, b 1686 After Richard died, the widow married Thomas HARLOCK 16 Nov. 1696. The father of Richard AREY was also named Richard. Richard AREY the father was a mariner "engaged in the coasting trade". He drowned on 19 Nov. 1668-9 on a trip to Nantucket. His wife was named Elizabeth. Vol. II of Bank's History mentions several law suits that Richard AREY was involved in. The History of Martha's Vineyard is fascinating. Sarah MARCHANT, wife of the 2nd Richard AREY above was from a well known family there. Let me know if you need any more info.
