ETHAN ALLEN by Sandy Clunies Sun Aug 25 1991 ------------------------------- During my research trip of 3+ weeks in July, I spent one afternoon outside Burlington VT visiting cuz Ethan ALLEN's home ! There is a nice restoration - you know they "found" his homestead "inside" another house - i.e., over the years, a larger house had been built over the core of the Ethan Allen Homestead. But a quality professional restoration was done, and now a multi-media presentation, gift shop, gardens restored, etc. very impressive task. A new pamphlet, "The Genealogy of Ethan Allen and His Brothers and Sisters" has been issued 1991 by the Ethan Allen Homestead Trust, comp. by John L. Barr. It is so new that when I got to Boston, and my week at NEHGS, they didn't even have it there yet. It was a kick for me to be telling Library Director George Sanborn about a booklet *I* found that *he* needed - and he agreed! This small (just 50pp) booklet takes Ethan & his siblings down a few generations. And, what's even more helpful, is an extended bibliography of the primary sources searched. The ALLEN surname does not linger long in the family - most of the names of the desc. are *not* ALLEN - seems that more daughters than sons carried on the line. If there were some very convenient way to return it, you would find it back in your mail box. Yes, don't remember exactly what I sent on ALLEN/ALLYN, but I do have Mathew ALLYN through his son John and his grandaughter Anna m. Joseph WHITING. I have now a little additonal on ALLYN in the book Lucius B arns Barbour, "Families of Early Hartford, Connecticut". If you need help with Mathew, give me your later ALLYN names and I will look them up for you. Mathew has his name on the new Founders Monument, dedicated 6 Aug 1986 in memory of the first settlers of Hartford, by the Society of the Descendants of the Founders of Hartford. If you need data from them, their address is : SDFH P. O. Box 215 West Hartford, CT 06107 Yes, Terry Smith did close down THE HOME PLACE bbs some time ago and so that echo is not received here either. The echo was only getting about 8-10 messages a week and was very dead. Probably the reason your local BBS dropped it. Thanks again for the contribution. But, please, I get more than enough compensation from the small amount of pleasure I am able to give others with my offerings. Lets try to keep in touch. -Jack- ... Do you know any ALLENs there and not SMITH? Guess I just need to stop for a cup of coffee or something. --- * Origin: N.W.
