REQUEST FOR RESEARCH PARTICIPANTS

WOMEN SEXUALLY ABUSED IN CHILDHOOD

Volunteer research participants are needed who meet the following criteria:
Women between the ages of 20 and 45 who:

Group 1
- The individual was sexually abused in childhood or adolescence
- The abuser was at least five years older than the victim was
- The individual has one child who is now between the ages of 12 and 24 months of age.

Group 2
- The individual was sexually abused in childhood or adolescence
- The abuser was at least five years older than the victim
- The individual has no children.

This is a request for participants in a study examining the effects of childhood sexual abuse, early social environment and becoming a mother on a woman's development. The study is conducted by Vicky G. Surratt, MA, FNP-C, a graduate student at The Fielding Institute as partial requirement for the Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology. Your participation is greatly appreciated and will require approximately 1 1/2 hours to answer a set of questionnaires.

Some of the questions asked are about sensitive information such as sexual abuse history, daily life functioning, early memories of oneself, primary caregivers, and primary family unit during childhood, and perceptions of parenting in females. Such questions regarding sensations, feelings, and images related to events from childhood have a potential for discomfort. If discomfort is experienced while answering the questions, you may call me collect at (336) 773-0900 with questions, concerns, and/or referral to a professional.

Results may help researchers, therapists, and families gain a better understanding of the effects of childhood and adolescent sexual abuse on a female survivor's relationships and adjustment. By completing and returning the questionnaires, you are consenting to participate in the study. This is an anonymous survey, so you identity will be unknown to anyone involved in the research. You have the right to withdraw at any time without any negative consequences. There will be no cost or charges to you for participation in the study. If you wish to have an abbreviated copy of the combined results, you should complete the attached request and return it in an envelope separate from the questionnaires to prevent matching of your responses to your identity. No individual results will be disclosed since data will be grouped.
