Insignia Guidelines
998
For indicating victories, two alternatives are given for each weapon. The first version uses off-the-shelf military emblems which result in a pattern different than intended by the CSFA but allows for easy and cost effective access to insignia for new fencers or those without access to sewing equipment. The second is a custom sewn design with guidlines which describe the basic rules that must be adhered to in creating ones own insignia.

Off-Shelf System

Military off-shelf system. This system uses US armed service branch rank insignia which is arranged as indicated.

Only the US Army insignia has rockers to use in construction the seven victory sequence. For foil and epee, chevrons can be used instead of rockers, placing them UPSIDE-DOWN.

US Navy
Black stripes on white backing, you MUST remove the other Naval insignia.
US Marine
Green stripes with red trim, you MUST remove any other backing or insignia.
US Army
Gold stripes on Brown backing, you MUST remove any central area between the chevrons and rockers.

Official Custom System

This system requires custom sewn insignia created either with sewing together material, having them custom made or embroidered.

The color schemes listed below each weapon are to be followed. Approximate dimesions are given.

Black chevrons and rockers trimmed in red thread. The background MUST be white. Green chevrons and rockers trimmed in red thread. The background MUST be white. Gold chevrons and rockers trimmed in black thread. The background MUST be white.

Color Recognition BLACK GREEN GOLD
Champion Recognition
The color bars are to be worn on the collar of the fencing jacket for the full time between successive tournaments to indicate the defending champion - and the one who must supply the subsequent award.

CSFA Sequence

The following two sequences depict the progression in victories for a single weapon (FOIL is uses as an example) from one to twelve victories. The upper sequence is when using the prefered insignia, the lower sequence is when using the off-the-shelf military insignia. In both cases, once the 8th victory has been achieved, the yellow/gold thread must be hand sewn in on top of the rockers and chevrons.

The progression is one chevron, two chevrons and then it is rocker - chevron - rocker - chevron until a total of seven (7) is reached. At that point, starting from the bottom rocker, gold center stripes are added to each element. The entire group will be filled with the gold by the completion of the 14th victory. If someone actually fences enough to obtain a 15th victory, we will need to devise a system of indicating this. Maybe a star in the center, between rockers and chevrons - and that is the final indicator - showing the fencer is a supreme master of CSFA fencing and that this person needs to get a life! ;-)
