The tournament took a very interesting course this year. First, we had an actual strip to fence on, thanks to the efforts of George Fuller. This meant no more tripping in holes and over stumps. It worked out quite well and took the abuse of the fencers jumping around on it all day. This brings us the the second item, a record 18 fencers participated in this tournament requiring the use of the back side of the sign up sheet!
The event lasted longer than expected and as daylight savings time ended the weekend before, it was actually DARK by the time the tournament ended. The last 3 bouts of foil were fenced in darkness with the final between Thomas and Bart illuminated partly from the headlights of a parked car. That was an experience not worth repeating; talk about not being able to see anything.
This tournament also saw the appearance of the rank stripes on the uniforms of previous champions as well as the collar pins for the reigning champions. The method of determining the sequence of the weapons was changed to a random draw from a cup of the collar insignia for the champions and bracket filling was done by a random draw of 16 tiles.
The event is a CSFA organized event designed to remove the fencers from the typical surroundings of competition. It was conceived in the twisted little minds of the Founders: Thomas Smailus, George Fuller, Beth Hughes.
The Horcktoberfest used the current CSFA rules of the event.
