Third Annual Horcktoberfest
October 31, 1997
Along the Mississippi River, LSU Baton Rouge

About the Event

This years event promises to be another interesting time for all participants. We again have a t-shirt supplier, so place your orders early (see below). Well, after much ado and little feedback, we have set the date of October, 31. This will be a true Halloween tournament and party. Friday, the 31st is the day. If you work, take the day off - students have off that day anyway as LSU has the fall holiday the 30-31st.

This years Halloween event was filled with less stress than usual; although we were threatened with being rained out again by a torrential downpour early in the morning. Lucky for us, it stopped and cleared up by the time we started with only a little damp grass to deal with.

This time we tried a new formula; rock-paper-sissors deciding the weapons order; and so it was that we had sabre, foil, epee as the sequence. Things went along quite smoothly with many new fencers participating; a welcome site. The two early victories and the long path to get there took their toll on Mr. Fuller as he was then pretty much out of commission for the Epee competition; sleeping off the peppermint - it was truly a Horcktoberfest for him.

The event ended up running quite a bit long - due in part to the number of participants; 13 in all, 12 for most of the events. So working with brackets of 16 and some weapons problems ("Hey did anyone see where my tip went?"), it was closing on darkness before the Epee competition was completed.

The event is a CSFA organized event designed to remove the fencers from the typical surroundings of competition. It was conceived in the twisted little minds of the Founders: Thomas Smailus, George Fuller, Beth Hughes.

The Horcktoberfest used the current CSFA rules of the event.
