Second Annual
Horcktoberfest
October 26, 1996
Within a mile of the Mississippi, LSU Baton Rouge
About the Event

The Second Annual CSFA Horcktoberfest was an adventure extrodinaire with all of
the forces and powers that be working to defeat us - but it would not be so as
we prevailed and the tournament was held as inspite of everything.
First there was the T-shirt disaster Kinkos dealt us, and you can read about
that below. Then LSU et. al. moved the football game from 7pm to 11:40am and
so the traffic, police induced mayhem and sports fan idiocy that comes with
that was thrown at us. Combine that with the weather turning decidedly sour
on Friday and it raining mostly Friday and this Saturday - the ground was
soaked. Inability to access due to barricades and mayhem combined with high
water and muddy ground prevented the event from taking place on the levy. Not
detered we set up shop in the parking lot in front of Georges' appartment and
fenced on.
Initially, the sun came out and things cleared up - it looked very promising.
The Southern tasted strong as ever. But then all hell broke loose as gallon
after gallon of water fell from the sky. The fencers braved the down pour and
the cooling water actually lessened the effect of the poisions although the
cold nearly incapacitated some particularly suseptible fencers; right
Beth?
When all was said and done, we had our three champions and and broke up to go
home and dry off in preparation for the evenings festivities, after all...
If you want blood, ..... you got it!.
The event is
a CSFA organized event designed to remove the fencers from the typical surroundings of competition.
It was conceived in the twisted little minds of the Founders: Thomas Smailus, George Fuller, Beth Hughes.
The Horcktoberfest used the
current CSFA rules of the event.
Specifics
Results are in, and the fencers are again dry:
- Participation: Fencing by invitation only.
- Date: October 26, 1996, 10am - 3pm (times approximate)
- Champions!:
- Foil Champion: Thomas Smailus
- Epee' Champion: Gus Landry
- Sabre Champion: Beth Hughes
- Prize Money: $CS 60 for 1st, $CS 30 for 2nd, $CS 15 for 3rd were
awarded.
- Poisons: The usual array: Southern
Comfort and the Victors Bain: the peppermint schnapps.
- T-Shirts: T-Shirts have been a real terror this time around. Kinkos
certainly doesn't look very professional. On three occasions the shirts were
promised, and each time I was dismayed to find no shirts. The 'employee of the
day' running the place never had any clue as to why the shirts were not
completed and the woman who tried to BS some excuse the third time they were
not ready as promissed actually got pissy and rude with me and told me 'the
shirts would be ready whenever they got around to them'. Be warned - Kinkos
blows. It's just a bunch of amatuers who know how to push the copier buttons -
or maybe the State Street location in Baton Rouge is just poorly run. In any
case, we still don't have shirts, and I think they are giving up - so I'll have
to find some other way of getting them made... stay tuned.
