The Confederate States Fencing Assocation Crest was
designed in conjunction with the four founding members to reflect the attitudes
and dispositions that they shared between them. The crest is composed of four
major fields. The tip field contains the last battle flag of the Confederate States of America and is used to represent the Southern heritage and origins of the association. The left field contains a gold goblet which symbolizes the cameradery and joi de vivre' the members share. Any actual goblet or glass held by a CSFA member would obviously hold beer or a shot of Southern Comfort. The right field contains the two crossed fencing weapons representing the fencing aspect of the organization. The weapons of foil and sabre are present as they are the primary weapons of the four founding members. The lower field contains a book to represent the learing and wisdom the founding members aquired while attending university in Louisiana. Upon the pages of this book are written the words Klaatu, Verata, Nikto which was pulled from the movie Army of Darkness and represents the humorous aspects of the group as well as a love for that particular film.
Notes: The first draft of the crest, as it was used in the
innaugural Horktoberfest in 1995, does not have the book in the lower field.
The field contained the dive flag of a red field with a white diagonal strip,
and was used to represent the diving interests each member had. However, as
the group had never been diving together and the prospects of that happening
were dimminishing, it was decided to replace that field with the current
one.
It should also be noted that the phrase Klaatu, Verata, Nikto first
occured in the science fiction classic, The Day the Earth Stood Still.
There is some discussion on whether the phrase is Klaatu, Verata, Nikto,
Klaatu, Barada, Nikto, or Claatu, Verata, Nicto or even other
variations. After some research relating to the movie Army of Darknes
and talking to people on the net, it is clear that Klaatu, Verata, Nikto
is what Ash says in the movie, and so that is what we are sticking with.
