The Second Annual

Bloodletting

About the Event

The second annual Bloodletting tournament of the CSFA was was held on June 7, 1997 on the banks of the Mississippi River in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, as the annual spring/summer tournament of the CSFA. The river levels had gone down from the floods so that we could fence in the same spot used last year, right next to the river. It rained the night before and earlier in the morning, so the ground was soggy, but a bit of non-muddy soil was found and things were underway.

The new format worked out well, with all 3 events fenced simultaneously and the three finals at the very end of the day as described in the CSFA Rules of the Duel. The sun came out and baked everyone as usual; and true to form some people nearly passed out from heat stroke. We also had a near mortal wounding of the delicate kind as a broken sabre blade pierced some clothing and barely missed the valuables. But, no one was hurt, short of a mild sunburn.

The tournament is held as a celebration of spirit and friendship between some of the membership of the regional fencing groups. It was a continuation of the sprit which lead to the founding of the CSFA. The event is a CSFA organized event designed to remove the fencers from the typical surroundings of competition. It was conceived in the twisted little minds of the Founders: Thomas Smailus, George Fuller, Beth Hughes.

Prize money will be awarded this time for the top 3 finishers in each event in the following breakdown:

Champions!

Foil Champion Mike Kimball (right)
Sabre Champion George Fuller (center)
Epee Champion Bart Kemper (left)
