Bloodletting

On the levee by the Mississippi, LSU Baton Rouge

About the Event

The innaugural Bloodletting on the Levee was held on June 29 of 1996 as the annual spring tournament for of the CSFA , on the banks of the Mississippi River as a celebration of spirit and friendship between some of the membership of the regional fencing groups. It was a continuation of the sprit which generated the Horcktoberfest and the founding of the CSFA. The event is a CSFA organized event designed to remove the fencers from the typical surroundings of competition. It was conceived in the twisted little minds of the Founders: Thomas Smailus, George Fuller, Beth Hughes and Heather Chapman.

The competition was a success although there were some near casualties. The day was warm and sunny but we quickly found trouble before we started when we discovered the cattle bathing in the pond that had been formed by the gathered rainwater from previous weeks downpours. Our old strip was underwater. We moved to a location that was dry and only 20 feet from the river, some 2 feet above the water level. Ideal. However, there was no shade, and as the day wore on and we fenced and drank, several people came close to passing out. Certainly not an event for the weak of constitution. In the end, we had our champions-elect and we packed up awaiting the evenings party.

The Bloodletting used the current CSFA rules of the event.

Prize money was awarded this time for the top 3 finishers in each event in the following breakdown:
