Soldiers of both sides were generally buried on the field where they died. It was common for trenches were used where many men died and, if time allowed, his friends would make some indication of the grave. But with time short and materials scarce, a piece of paper or a plank of wood with name and unit penciled in left. This led to a very quick loss of markers. Grave sites were also noted for possible recovery at a later date, under a flag of truce. This was not always possible. The task at Gettysburg was huge and included the godies of over 5,000 horses killed duting the battle. Mistakes were undoubtedly made as this site shows.
George Cauthen Brasington was the oldest brither of my great grandfather, John Samuel Brasington. My Great Grandfather was at Gettysburg (Private Milton Calhoun Harrison, 12th Regiment of SC Volunteers, Company F, "Means Light Infantry") along with Great Great Grandfather Private Andrew Jackson Small, 2nd Regiment of SC Volunteers, Company G, "The Flat Rock Guards", as well as Great Great Grandfather, 2nd Lieutenant Marion Richard Hinson, 2nd Regiment of SC Volunteers, Company H, "The Lancaster Invincibles", who died at Gettysburg)
Notes: 1) The # column is the grave at Magnolia Cemetery where this Southern Patriot was reburied. 2) Rose's Farm was the site of battle of Kershaw's Brigade and a te,porary aid station was set-up there. 3) Bream's "Black Horse" Tavern was purchased by Francis Bream in 1842. It is located at the intersection of Black Horse Tavern Road and the Hagerstown Road, adjacent to Marsh Creek, about two miles west of Gettysburg. Bream's "Black Horse" Tavern and farm was McLaws' division hospital with some of Hood's men there as well. 4) Chester, Pennsylvania was a major resting spot of ANV on the way out of gettysburg 5) Camp Letterman - Treatment of the wounded left at Gettysburg was left up to the mercy of the Army of the Potomac. Dr. Jonathan Letterman, Medical Director for the Army of the Potomac. He issued orders on 5 July 1863, to establish a general hospital in the Gettysburg area and provide transportation and supplies to the site for treatment of the wounded. In his honor, the temporary hospital was named after him. The site chosen for the vast hospital camp was on the George Wolf Farm, roughly one and one-half miles east of Gettysburg on the York Pike. Approximately 1,200 men were buried on site at Camp Letterman. Southern remains were exhumed between 1872 and 1873 for relocation to southern cemeteries.
