Subject: Angell!

Lots of David news...

I went up to Angell's office today to get him to sign my book. He's
very nice and we chatted for a few minutes. I was trying not to be too
nosey peeking around his office as we spoke looking for David items.
Alas there were none :-( He did have lots of baseball related
drawings and cartoons all around.

It is not David on the cover. I told Angell I didn't think so because
David's nails never look that good, and he agreed.

He said the publicity dept. for Warner Books didn't want any photos of
David in pinstripes. They felt associating him with the Yankees would
hurt sales of the book! Angell was very annoyed and said he thought
while there were a few people who now disliked David he felt the
majority of his fans were still fans. Boo Warner.

Angell spoke with David yesterday! He said he's in great spirits and
very upbeat about his progress. His pitches have been clocked at 90
(as we know) and they're waiting until he gets his pitch count up to
100 pitches before they bring him up. He speaks with Jimy and Kerrigan
regularly, and they have reiterated that David will have the #2 spot
in the rotation behind Pedro when he's ready!

David is working out in Ft. Myers, where his in-laws have a condo, and
communtes back and forth between Ft. Myers and his own home in Tampa.
Lynn is based in Tampa right now.

I told Angell about the website that recommends his book for Advanced
Placement English students, and he was very pleased to hear about it.

KC I also told him about your website, and he said he's seen it! He
said he didn't know if David has had a look, but he's internet savvy
so he said he'll try to remember to tell him about it when they talk
next. I had brought a paper with the URL on it and left it with him.
How's that for a shameless plug? LOL. I told Angell there's a message
board linked to the site where fans contribute news and talk about
David's career, and that he's got a lot of fans not just in NY but all
over the country.

Last but not least, here is what he wrote in my book:

For Susan -
All my best to a real Cone fan. And let's go (underlined) David!

Wow Susan! What an exciting day for you, and thanks for sharing all the
good news with us! Even though we did know somewhat about David's
progress, it was really neat to hear that Angell had spoken with him and
said he sounded great...I am very happy for him!

That is really wacky about Warner and the no Yankee pictures thing...I
guess I can understand a bit...but I don't think it would have really hurt
sales, either...like you said Angell said, a majority of his fans are
probably still his fans...and I think this list is good proof of that! :)

And thank you *so much* for speaking to him about the site! I can't
believe he's seen it already! While I am thrilled (yes, Laura! :)) I'm a
little embarassed, too...can you see me blushing? :) That's really nice
of him to offer to tell David himself about it...I have wondered if David
has seen it before, knowing that he does peruse the internet, but I wasn't
sure if he ever did searches on himself, haha....Anyways, thank you so
much again Susan, I really appreciate it...and congrats on the cool
autograph! :)

Take care! ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

LOL... I'm up for an "oprah" style book discussion!~ So far I have only got through the first few chapters...it's so hard to read and watch Yankee games at the same time ;)

KC.. perhaps in the near future we could plan a chat discussion in the Coney's Court chat room ;)  That could be fun!  I wish I lived in NY we could plan an actual book discussion meeting at Mickey Mantel's or some other baseball related location.  What can I say, I am always trying to make plans.  Or at least offer ideas :)

RU- I couldn't agree more with you regarding the style of the book.. it flows so nicely and I guess I just love how Angell connects things. He certainly is a baseball fan through and through!!  On a side note, it was so nice reading about Joe Girardi in the book too.. I didn't realize how much I missed him in pinstripes :)

Anyway... have a great Thursday all

Hey Laura, I was thinking also that a book discussion would be great. I
finished it last night, and the whole way through I came across things I needed
to talk to someone about. Some of the things were cool things that made me
happy, and some were things that made me so angry I wanted to scream!!

The reports are positive for David Cone (right shoulder) and negative
for Bret Saberhagen (right shoulder) as they engage in their
respective rehabs in Fort Myers. Cone threw three effective innings
in extended spring training on May 7, and is penciled in to throw on
May 12 for Sarasota (Class A). Saberhagen is still sidelined after
developing irritation in his right shoulder. ...

Michael Kay mentioned A Pitcher's Story in his daily article for MSG Network.

Roger Angell's book, "A Pitcher's Story, Innings with David Cone," is a
solid read and a comprehensive look into the hell that was Cone's 2000 season.

He must have really liked it because he also said something about it on air

postive vibes towards florida for tomorrow, and thanks for the headsup about
kay luck, of course its a solid read, when i finally got it in the mail, i was
soo happy and couldnt put it down, my roommate grabbed it from me, and said
"whats so great about this david cone anyway?" ok, she knows nothing about
baseball, she thinks babe ruth is still alive and playing for the yanks, anyway
i gave it to her to read and she loved it, and even raved about it to a friend,
now, if a nonbaseball fan can love it, it has to be a great book, btw luck, did
you get the book yet??

Hi Everyone!!! RU, I finally got the book but I didn't start it yet. LOL It's
kinda funny actually. I'm in the middle of a big project for spanish so my
mom took the book from me and is hiding it until I'm done!!! I looked all
over for it and I have no idea where she put it. I'm almost done with my
project, thank God, so hopefully my mom will let me have it some time this
weekend. LOL Isn't that crazy??? I was so mad at her! LOL That's so funny
about your roommate! I'm glad she liked it though. I bet once I start reading
it I won't be able to put it down and I'll read the whole thing in one day.
LOL I'm sure I'll read it like 10 times too. I can't wait to have that book
chat! I guess I should read the book first though huh? haha! Ohhh I'm sooo
happy because MY Clay Bellinger made an awesome catch in the 9th inning that
saved a home run! (I'm secretly in love with him. Oops, I guess it's not a
secret anymore... haha) Well, at least I didn't steal his fork like somebody
I know with her heartthrob. Of course if I had the opportunity I would too...
;) Well, the Yankees won 14-5 so now we just gotta root for Boston and
Toronto to lose! YAY!!! :)

He pitched in Sarasota... Over 4 innings he gave up 2 hits and struck
out 6! According to a post on the Boston Usenet group, there has been
some speculation that David may be brought up to pitch in KC on
Friday. Crawford would be sent back to Pawtucket.

I guess we all know who's going to the game on Friday ;-)

RED SOX NOTEBOOK
Cone is getting closer

He may be back by end of week

By Gordon Edes, Globe Staff, 5/13/2001

David Cone could be making his first start for the Red Sox by the end
of this week, general manager Dan Duquette said yesterday.

Cone started last night for Single A Sarasota in Port Charlotte, Fla.
Cone shut out the Charlotte Rangers with four innings of two-hit ball.
Cone struck out six and walked none in Sarasota's 7-1 win.

''We're going to be watching him closely,'' Duquette said. ''If all
goes well, he'll make his next start for us.''

Cone began the season on the disabled list with what has officially
been called right shoulder inflammation.

If the Sox gave Cone another rehab start before bringing him up,
Duquette said, that would put him on track to make his first two
starts against the Yankees, his ex-team, which is something the Sox
would prefer to avoid. Bringing him up now would put Cone on track to
pitch Thursday night in Minnesota, depending on how manager Jimy
Williams aligns his rotation.

Sox pitching coach Joe Kerrigan said Cone would be watched last night
by Ralph Treuel, the minor league pitching coordinator.

''He'll be our eyes,'' said Kerrigan, who said the hope was that Cone
would pitch at least four innings.

Pichardo also activated, Ohka and Crawford optioned to Pawtucket

By Associated Press, 05/13/01
BOSTON -- David Cone will join Boston's rotation and start on
Thursday against the Minnesota Twins, a day after Tim
Wakefield makes his first start of the season for the Red Sox.

Hipolito Pichardo will also be recalled from a rehab assignment
in a move that the Red Sox said will be effective Monday.
Paxton Crawford and Tomo Ohka were optioned to Triple-A
Pawtucket on Sunday to make room on the roster.

Cone, who won the 1994 AL Cy Young Award, signed with the
Red Sox in January after spending the past 5 1-2 years with
the New York Yankees. He was 4-14 with a 6.91 ERA in 30
games last year and lost eight straight decisions in a 15-start
winless streak.

The Red Sox were optimistic that he could put his 2000
troubles behind him, but he hurt his right shoulder during
spring training.

In his most recent rehab start, on Saturday for Class A
Sarasota, Cone pitched four innings and allowed two hits while
striking out six.

Wakefield pitched two innings on Sunday in his 12th relief
appearance of the season. The knuckleballer has a 1-0 record
with a 1.76 ERA in 30 2-3 innings with 25 strikeouts and six
walks.

Ohka was 2-2 with a 3.57 ERA in seven starts for Boston this
season. Crawford was 3-0 with a 4.76 in seven starts.

The changes to the rotation are the first for the Red Sox this
year.

Hi everyone! Wow, a lot of great news from this past weekend! I am so
glad that David is doing well and will be pitching with the Red Sox later
this week! Fabulous! Thank you all for sending the news and
updates...and I have to apologize at my laxing on it all...I haven't
gotten my computer all hooked up yet, (for those of you who didn't know I
have just moved) so I haven't gotten any of this wonderful news until just
today...and also, the site most likely won't be updated until I get
everything squared away in my home-internet department..:) Just wanted
everyone to know, I am still here and am NOT abandoning the site!

Thanks again to everyone for the fantastic news! So David will be
starting on Thursday in Minnesota..? So he most likely will not be
pitching in KC...?

Take care~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

OMG!!!..

I can't believe I canceled my plans to KC!! Damnit! :)I was going to go to
KC that very weekend to see Boston play, but didn't think Coney's rehab
would have been complete!! (he's just soo impressive).

Well I am just glad he is coming back to do what he loves the most.. albeit
in that awful uniform (yes, I still will never get over that). The good
news is, that I can actually watch him pitch. If he really is coming back
this Thursday I can see him on my extra-innings package that I have on
direcTV. Maybe I will tape the game. If anyone is is interested let me
know. I have two tv's so I can tape David and still watch my beloved
Yankees ;)

Thanks for the updates on David.. and for those of you who haven't finished
the book.. don't worry yet.. my suggestion of a book discussion was just to
see if anyone was interested.. so we can arrange a time (Susan, I agree it
must be on an off day.. or when the Yanks are out west.. gag those late
night games)when we all have the time to chat.. I have finished the book and
have mixed emotions. It certainly took you up and down. I won't get too
much into the details. But, hope the rest of you are enjoying reading it.

Have a great (ugh) Monday :)

Cone to join Red Sox rotation
By JIMMY GOLEN
AP Sports Writer
May 14, 2001

BOSTON (AP) -- David Cone will get his chance to show that his
horrible 2000 season was an aberration.

The 38-year-old right-hander will start on Thursday night against the
Minnesota Twins, his first appearance for the Boston Red Sox since
they signed the free agent last winter. He had been on a minor league
rehabilitation assignment since injuring his right shoulder during
spring training.

``Rather than have him continue that rehab and use his bullets down
there, we'd rather have him use them with our ballclub,'' Boston
manager Jimy Williams said Sunday after announcing that Cone and
Tim Wakefield will return to the rotation.

Starters Paxton Crawford and Tomo Ohka were sent to Triple-A
Pawtucket to create space for Cone and Wakefield, who had been in
the bullpen. Hipolito Pichardo was recalled from a rehab assignment
and put in the bullpen.

``You're not going to make a move unless you really feel good about
it,'' Williams said.

The changes are the first to the Boston starting staff of the year --
a streak of seven uninterrupted rotations for a staff that has been
derided as Pedro Martinez and the other guys. The other starters are
Frank Castillo (3-2, 4.89 ERA) and Hideo Nomo (4-2, 3.80), who pitched
a no-hitter in his Red Sox debut.

Neither Crawford (3-0, 4.76) nor Ohka (2-2, 3.57) had pitched poorly,
but each has options remaining, meaning the team can send them
down without risk of losing them.

``Neither one of them really did anything wrong,'' Williams said.

Cone won the AL Cy Young Award with the Royals in 1994 and pitched
a perfect game for the Yankees in '99. In a 15-year career, he has a
184-116 record and a 3.40 ERA.

Before last year, he had six straight winning seasons and had not had
an ERA above 3.60 since 1987. But he struggled in 2000, going 4-14
with a 6.91 ERA in 155 innings and losing eight straight decisions
during a 15-start winless streak.

Just when he seemed to be regaining some of his form, he dislocated
his left shoulder on Sept. 5 at Kansas City. He made only two relief
appearances in the 2000 World Series, delivering a key out when he
induced Mike Piazza to hit a fly ball in the fifth inning of Game 4.

He made $12 million last year, but the Yankees offered to take him
back as a fifth starter at a $500,000 salary. By making the Red Sox
roster, he guaranteed himself $2 million, with a potential for another
$3 million in incentives.

But his shoulder acted up this spring, and he was left behind when the
team broke camp. Cone threw 48 pitches in a rehab assignment for
Sarasota on Sunday, allowing two hits and striking out six in four
scoreless innings. His fastball was clocked between 88 and 91 mph.

Wakefield pitched two innings on Sunday in his 12th relief appearance.
The knuckleballer has a 1-0 record with a 1.76 ERA in 30 2-3 innings
with 25 strikeouts and six walks.
