Pen - thanks for the article, I didn't have time to read it yesterday, but
it brought a smile to my face this morning. As K Cone said - remember when
all was right with the world?

I am worried about the injury, too, but I think if anyone could come back
from it, it's our Coney - remember he already came back from a
career-threatening, and basically life-threatening situation once.

Wishing a happy and blessed Easter to our Christian courtiers!

And smiles to everyone...

Ally :)

Cone Report: Red Sox pitcher David Cone, on the disabled list with
right shoulder inflammation, threw on the side Thursday in Fort Myers,
Fla. "From my understanding, it's as good as he felt all spring,"
Williams said. "They said he had pretty good life for the first time
back off a mound. At least he's going in the right direction."

Cone hasn't pitched for the Sox this season, but a hat and a No.36
jersey are in his locker, along with a stack of his mail.

Righthander Bret Saberhagen suffered a setback that was described as
not serious to his right shoulder. He had been scheduled to start for
Class A Sarasota, but that was pushed back indefinitely. David Cone
was also rounding into form as he was slowly making progress from his
own shoulder soreness. Both veterans were expected to work out with
the club when it traveled to Tampa Bay for three games beginning
April 16. . . .

Subject: Cone making progress

YAHOO!!

April 17, 2001

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- Boston Red Sox pitcher David Cone threw all of his
pitches during a bullpen session Tuesday for the first time since
going on the disabled list with right shoulder tendinitis.

Cone threw approximately 50 pitches during his fourth bullpen session
before the Red Sox played the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. He could begin
throwing batting practice by next week at the team's complex in Fort
Myers, Fla.

"My mindset is to get healthy and go from there," Cone said. "I'm
very encouraged with the progress that I've made. I just have to get
ready and see what happens. It's a little tough to project when I'll
be ready."

Cone signed with the Red Sox in January after spending the past 5 1-2
years with the New York Yankees. He was hurt during spring training
and has not yet made a regular season appearance with Boston.
"It's hard to feel part of the team when you're on the DL and you
haven't pitched a game yet," Cone said. "You still pull for
everybody."

Cone watched last weekend's series between the Red Sox and Yankees on
TV from his home in the Tampa area. It would have been his first
opportunity to face his former team.

"I was just envious not being able to be there," Cone said. "It was
a great series. It's tough to miss that."

Right-hander Bret Saberhagen, who is coming back after right shoulder
surgery, has slowed down his rehab after experiencing some shoulder
discomfort.

The problem developed last week the day after Saberhagen made a rehab
appearance. He has resumed playing catch.

Sox preach patience with pitchers: Cone boosted by bullpen session
by Jeff Horrigan
Wednesday, April 18, 2001

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - David Cone came to the realization over the weekend
that his ties to the New York Yankees were officially severed when he tuned
in his satellite dish and found himself in the uncustomary position of
rooting for the Red Sox during the four-game series at Fenway Park.

Even though he has yet to pitch an official game for the Red Sox, Cone
discovered that his allegiances had completely shifted away from the team
that he had played for over the previous six seasons.

``It's tough to feel like a part of the team when you're on the disabled list
and you haven't pitched a game, but I was still pulling for (the Sox),'' said
the right-hander, who has been rehabilitating his right shoulder in Florida
since experiencing shoulder pain in mid-March. ``I was kind of envious about
not being able to be there.''

Cone, who signed a one-year contract with the Red Sox on Jan. 11, was
penciled in as the Sox' No. 2 starter behind Pedro Martinez at the start of
spring training. He was just beginning to indicate that his dreadful 2000
season - in which he went 4-14 with a 6.91 ERA for the Yankees - was an
anomaly when his shoulder acted up.

Cone, 38, was sidelined for the final three weeks of camp and remained in
Fort Myers to rehab when the team headed north to open the season. Working
under the supervision of rehab coordinator Chris Correnti, he was instructed
to take a deliberate pace with his workouts. As Cone admitted, this would
likely be his last chance.

Over the last month, he has strengthened the shoulder (with the aid of
regular acupuncture treatments) to a point where it is now stronger than it
has been in several years. Cone threw 46 pitches off the bullpen mound at
Tropicana Field yesterday and wowed all observers.

``That's the best he's thrown all spring,'' pitching coach Joe Kerrigan said.
``I'd say he hit 40-of-46 spots and his fastball was as crisp as I've seen.''

The session was Cone's fourth off a mound since injuring the shoulder. He is
expected to throw on the side again on Friday and then pitch batting practice
twice next week. If all goes well, the former Cy Young Award winner will
likely begin pitching in games in two weeks.

``I'm a lot better than I was when the team broke out of spring training,''
Cone said. ``It's been tough for me. That was the first time in 15 years that
I hadn't been ready. I was very low.''

Although it's too soon to pinpoint a date for his return to the majors, Cone
is now confident that he will make it back.

``It's tough to project when I'll be ready, but when I am, I wonder if
there's going to be a spot for me,'' he said. ``I guess it bodes well for the
organization that everyone's pitching so well.''

Ouch! I think that part of the article hurt the most :(

Well I guess it's obvious if you go to another team, you should probably root for them to succeed (duh!!).

I guess since I haven't officially seen David pitch for Boston I still am in denial that he is acutally on the team.  Perhaps when I finally see him pitch in a game, I will too, know he is no longer part of the Yankees.

The news overall is good, however, I also wonder where he will fit in the rotation.  I think in the long run one has to look at consistency.  David is a veteren and overall might have a better track record compared to some other their other starters in terms of "being in it for the long haul".  This is not to belittle the Boston's current rotation, as I think they have been pitching very well, but you have to look at how long (with the exception of Pedro and maybe Nomo) they will last.  Acutally it is a scary thought for a Yankee fan, b/c the Red Sox's rotation is doing so well, but if one of them should falter they might have Coney as their back-up. This does not bode well for us Yankee fans, but surely does for SD.

Have a great day!

Laura,

I agree 100% on the part about rooting for the Red Sox and having his allegiances totally shifted hurting the worst, I thought I was OK with this, but that was like, OOPS!

I guess he has to hope they succeed, though - they're paying the bills now, and it would be a poor teammate that hoped they lost!

The Sox' rotation has been surprisingly good so far this year, let's see how they go as the season goes on.  I have a definite feeling there will be a place for SD when he is physically up to it - I just don't see them all holding up through a full year.

Keep smiling...:)

Jason Giambi of the A's: My first one came off David Cone. That's not
too bad, eh? That will always be a big one. Mark McGwire was excited
for me. Lance Parrish was catching, and I remember him (from when I
was in) high school in Southern California. He got Cone to sign it for
me. Of course, I did not get a hit off Cone for the next two years.

Angell works in my building (duh). When my book arrives I'm going to
go up to his office and get it signed. Maybe he'll "talk David" with

Penny it's great to hear about David's outing. I wonder how he did?

Laura the Jason Giambi piece was from an article the Sporting News had
on players talking about HRs.

Hi everyone! First, thank you Penny for the little update...sounds
fabulous! Hopefully they will let us know more about the
evaluation...wonder what minor league team they may have him work with?
Sarasota or Ft Myers I'd imagine since he's already down in Florida...?

Also, that's great you found that link Susan, and thanks for sharing it
with everyone! As some of you know, I already have the book and I have to
say the first chapter is *just* the beginning...Angell is just such a
beautiful, intelligent writer...and you can just tell how much he cares
for David as a friend but how he is also just a big fan of his work! And
the emotions....wow, I have tears behind my eyes with each word...

Oh, and great little tidbit from Giambi! That was cute...:)

Continue to keep good thoughts!~ ~ ~ ~~ ~~ ~

Subject: Odds & Ends

From the Sporting News:

David Cone (right shoulder) is throwing live batting practice on the
side but still weeks away from returning to game action.

I found a really nice article from last October on David. Take a look:

http://www.newsday.com/sports/subway/stories/nd3301.htm

Also if you missed my post on Bronx Bombers I spoke with Roger Angell
today (we both work for Conde Nast) and he said because David is
rehabilitating his shoulder he's not able to do a book signing. He
said it's been increasingly difficult to get any time with him because
of all he's been through, and once he does begin pitching again the
baseball schedule will make it impossible for David to appear
anywhere.

Angell does plan on promoting the book himself and has a few things
coming up which haven't been finalized yet. He'll most likely be doing
a signing at Barnes & Noble in Manhattan, but doesn't know which
location.

He was very pleased to hear how much I enjoyed his writing and told me
he'd be glad to sign my book when it arrives. Gosh I'm excited to meet
someone who knows David so well!

Don't worry KC, I'll plug your site ;)

And here's something odd I found - A website School House Books

http://schoolhousebooksweb.com/20_cent_langap.html

has a list called the "Library of Suggested Reading of Twentieth
Century Works" which are the latest recommended authors for the
English Advanced Placement Language and Composition classes by The
College Board as located in the Acorn Book, 2000-2001. "A Pitcher's
Story" is on the list of recommended books!
