| Forgive me for saying this, but
Sterling & Kay have become a bunch of "homers". I tuned out Sterling a long time ago but even Kay is becoming unlistenable now. According to them the Yankees can do no wrong but if anyone else does something the least bit questionable they're NEVER given the benefit of a doubt. Frankly, most of what they say goes in one ear and out the other. What people seem to be forgetting about is that David Cone is only 15 victories shy of 200 wins. To put it another way, he's only 15 wins away from a near-guaranteed induction into Cooperstown. I, for one, think Cone owes the Yankees nothing. Business is business and both parties have to look after their own best interests. Both have mutually benefitted from the other but when one side's (or both) best interest is compromised, as was the case, it's time to say good bye. Nothing personal...I wish him all the best. He gave us alot of great memories. James |

Hi everyone! Thanks Susan for that little tidbit...but it is no surprise
that I'm not exactly pleased with the opinions of S&K...:) I believe you
are correct in saying that David refrained from working out last offseason
because he wanted to conserve his arm for October...the year before he was
doing well and everything, but come the end of October he began to get
really tired...I read that he ached for like 2 days after Game 2 of the
'99 World Series. Anyhow, so yes, his intention was to rest the arm so he
could be strong come post-season. His head and heart were in the right
place, just unfortunately his body didn't agree with them....so once again
the
"enlightened" thoughts of S&K where Cone is concerned are pretty much
useless...:)
Also what I find to be interesting is people like to bring up Pettitte's
"wonderful" year...but Britt (our little statistical genius :)) pointed
out around the second half of the season that while Pettitte may have had
more wins, he and Cone shared about the same amount of Quality
Starts...yet to the fans Pettitte had this *grand* year while Cone had a
"bad" one. It just goes to show there is so much more to pitching than
just a W-L record....
James!! It was so great to hear from you and your post was fabulous I
must say...couldn't agree with you more. (though I think it's 16 wins
Cone is after :)) I, too, believe Cone owes the Yankees nothing...he has
already given them so much I don't know how anyone could require more...I
understand how the business of baseball can be a nasty affair, but I don't
see this situation as an example of that. This decision logically makes
sense, however that doesn't mean it hasn't left certain emotions in a
solemn state...
Ally, thanks for your Christmas wishes! :) I also would like to wish you
all a very Merry Christmas and Fabulous New Year!! Enjoy the MSG shows!!
:)
Take care~ ~ ~ ~ ~

| Subject: | Rangers and Royals both interested in Cone |
By RONALD BLUM AP Sports Writer December 22, 2000 NEW YORK (AP) -- The Kansas City Royals are interested in David Cone as their closer, the Texas Rangers as a starter. Cone isn't sure which team he wants to play for and could consider others. ``He primarily has been interested in starting and coming back,'' agent Steve Fehr said Friday. ``He's interested in helping a contender, getting to 200 wins, etc.'' Texas general manager Doug Melvin met earlier this week with Cone and Fehr. Alex Rodriguez has pushed for the Rangers to sign Cone, who worked out as Melvin watched. ``I would hate to characterize anything,'' Fehr said. ``There is mutual interest. They can use him.'' Rick Helling, Kenny Rogers and Darren Oliver are the Rangers' first three starters, Kansas City, Cone's first major league team, would like him to make a switch to the bullpen. ``What they're saying now if their intended use for him primarily is the closer's role,'' Fehr said. Cone had been the Yankees since 1995 but he wasn't interested in returning to New York as its fifth starter next season and the Yankees wanted to cut his salary, which was $12 million last season, offering a guarantee of only $500,000. Cone, who will be 38 next season, has a 184-116 career record with a 3.40 ERA, also pitching for the New York Mets, Kansas City and Toronto. He won the AL Cy Young Award with the Royals in 1994. -- susan peters ~ [email protected] |

Hmmm...I seem to remember S+K commenting during ST this year that Coney had indeed purposely rested his arm over the offseason, as KC stated. And didn't Billy Connors also say that if David embarked on a conditioning program ovr this off-season, he'd probably bounce back? I don't know if S+K covered that, but if they did I don't think they laced it with any disapproval of David. I think Kay is less of a homer than Sterling, but while I've heard him criticize some of the players a number of times, I haven't heard him get on the management's case that much. Now, I'm not going to deny that I wished David had stayed with the Yankees, or say "this was definitely for the best", because I'm not sure. But I haven't been in his shoes, and I don't fault him for the choice he made. Especially since it seemed the Yankee management were as responsible for the "split" as Cone himself. I see some parallels to the Mussina situation, although in that case Mussina was being courted by other teams while Angelos treated him perfunctorily (Moose even said that he suspected he would have been traded during the mid-season purge if not for his no-trade clause). That wasn't true for David, it seems. And of course Mussina left a losing team for a winning one. But both seemed to get the feeling that their original teams didn't really want them back. I've also heard a rumor that the Rangers are interested in David Wells too, so if Coney goes there, he might be reunited with his old drinking buddy... :o) Yeah, I know the Wells-to-Mets rumor is probably most hyped, but it seems the Mets might not want to give up Rusch, who is also a lefty, and young... -- Akino aka BG (o:P |

Hi everyone! Hope you all had a Merry Christmas! There still isn't a lot
of news concerning Cone, but I did find this today....:
Royals still talking to Cone, but no offer yet
By DICK KAEGEL - The Kansas City Star
Date: 12/27/00 22:15
Royals general manager Allard Baird and right-hander David Cone have
exchanged holiday greetings this week but not much else. The Royals have
extended no contract offer, for sure.
"I spoke to Coney yesterday morning," Baird said Wednesday from New York.
"I just wished him the best for the holidays and told him much we enjoyed
spending some time with him and if he had any questions or thoughts or if
there was anything I could do in reference to him making a decision, I'd
be more than happy to talk to him about it. That's kind of where it
stands."
The Royals want Cone to become a reliever, possibly the much-needed
closer, for next season.
But the Texas Rangers and other clubs want Cone to remain a starter, and
that's probably his preferred niche.
"I'm kind of taking it on the basis right now that he's going to go back
and continue his starting role," Baird said. "But if he wants to come back
as a reliever, there's no question we'll be making an offer."
Cone told Baird he had not made a decision yet.
"I think everybody is assuming he'll continue the starting role and his
desire is to pitch for a winner and be a starter," Baird said.
Steve Fehr, Cone's agent in Kansas City, would not say whether Cone has
received any offers from other clubs, including the Texas Rangers.
"We're having conversations with a handful of teams including the Royals
and including the Rangers," Fehr said.
"I don't think it's terribly likely that David would sign before sometime
next week but we'll see."
Other clubs believed to be interested include the Oakland A's and the
Baltimore Orioles.
Fehr said that Cone did decide to become a reliever, the Royals are the
only club with which he'd consider such a role.
Cone, who'll turn 38 next Tuesday, is just 16 wins shy of the 200-victory
milestone in his career. He was 4-14 for the New York Yankees last season.
Baird, vacationing in New York, said he'd touch base with first baseman
Mike Sweeney's agent, Seth Levinson, while there. The Royals are trying to
sign Sweeney to a multiyear contract.
There is nothing new on a trade involving outfielder Johnny Damon, Baird
said.
**** So he may not sign or anything until next week...maybe longer! It
seems Cone is really taking his time in deciding what role he wants to
play next year whether it be starter or closer, which is good...this is a
big decision for him. I think this is why no offers have been made yet,
teams aren't really sure which way he wants to go right now...
Take care~ ~ ~ ~~

In case you missed this post on Bronx-Bombers, here's an update on the situation with David and the Rangers: Cone pursuit continues, but offer hasn't been made 01/03/2001 By Evan Grant / The Dallas Morning News Back to work Tuesday after a long weekend, the Rangers continued their pursuit of free-agent pitcher David Cone. General manager Doug Melvin got back in touch with Cone's agent to discuss a one-year, incentive-laden deal. Cone, who turned 38 on Tuesday, has also been pursued by Kansas City, which would like to turn him into a closer. Cone grew up in Kansas City. While the sides have spoken in general terms of a contract, the Rangers have yet to present a firm offer. Melvin said he would speak with Cone's agent, Steve Fehr, again on Wednesday and expects to know the pitcher's decision by the end of the week. Fehr has maintained since it became apparent that Cone would not return for a sixth season with the New York Yankees that his client would like to remain a starter. The Rangers are willing to give Cone a spot in the starting rotation, which would promote competition between left-handers Darren Oliver and Doug Davis and right-hander Ryan Glynn for the final two slots. "We are still talking and there is mutual interest, but I don't know if anything will happen," Fehr said. Cone, who went 4-14 for the Yankees last year, could help the Rangers with his presence as much as with his pitching. Respected for his insight into the game, Cone could provide a complementary voice to new pitching coach Larry Hardy for some of the young pitchers. -- susan peters ~ [email protected] |

Good Morning All! Susan- I just read your post on bb.com I guess it was going to happen.. so they (Texas) made him an offer and now, we have to wait.. I have mixed feelings I guess. I would rather see him a Royal than a Ranger, but I know if it means remaining a starter, and getting those 200 wins then I will be happy for him.. but oh... why in a red uni ;) Well is it too soon for me to say what I am about to???... Anyone up for a road trip to Texas??? I just can't fathom going to watch him play at Yankee Stadium in a Ranger uni- so I will have to go to Texas! Have a great weekend everyone! Laura |

Laura, As much as I would love to road trip to Texas with you, there's no way I can afford it with the other trips[read: Spring Training and Kansas City] I'm making this year! I will have to hope that between the Rangers' trip to Chicago May 11-13, their trip to New York July 31-Aug 2, and their Spring Training game against the Yankees on March 23rd while I am in Fla, I will get to see him at least once. (If he ends up with the Rangers, that is.) If you do it, though, have fun! Yours, Britt |

For those of you who do not peruse the forums...thelatest news on Cone and
the Rangers...:
Rangers play waiting game after making offer to Cone
01/05/2001
By Evan Grant / The Dallas Morning News
The Rangers are ready to bring David Cone aboard their newly refurbished
ship. Now, it's up to Cone to make a decision.
The slow negotiation with the agent for the free-agent pitcher inched
forward Thursday when the Rangers finally made a contract offer. The
Rangers have been hoping to sign Cone to a one-year contract with a
low-base salary, which could jump significantly because of incentive
clauses.
"I've never had anybody take the first thing I've offered," Rangers
general manager Doug Melvin said after his morning conversation with agent
Steve Fehr. "I don't think there is any rush to get it done. We've talked
about the framework of a deal."
Through a clerk in his office, Fehr said only that the sides were
continuing to talk.
Of still available free agents, the Rangers have identified Cone, who
turned 38 on Tuesday, as the most attractive starting pitcher. Cone, who
has won 184 games in his career, had six consecutive winning seasons
before going 4-14 with the New York Yankees last year. Last season, he had
a 6.91 ERA for 155 innings, his first season above 3.60 since 1987.
The Rangers' main competition has been Kansas City, which is Cone's
hometown. The Royals would like to turn Cone into a closer, but he would
rather remain a starter.
The addition of Cone probably would push either Darren Oliver, Doug Davis
or Ryan Glynn from the starting rotation to the bullpen.

There'salso another article at
http://www.startext.net/news/doc/1047/1:SPORTS54/1:SPORTS540104101.html
It basically relays the same news, but stresses the possibility that Cone
could give an answer yet today....

http://www.geocities.com/coney36_nyy/
Hello everyone...This is the latest I've found on Cone and the Rangers...:
David Cone, the former Yankee and free-agent pitcher, has received a
one-year, incentive-laden offer from Texas, but the right-hander is also
talking to at least one other team and is not sure if he will accept the
Rangers' offer.
Cone, who turned 38 on Tuesday, wants to remain a starter and wants to
pitch for a contender. He was 4-14 with a 6.91 earned run average for the
Yankees last season. Cone needs 16 victories to reach 200 for his career.
Cone did not answer a telephone message yesterday seeking comment about
his plans.
***There's also an editorial at
http://www.startext.net/columnist/sullivan_fc.htm This guy apparently
thinks it's a bad idea for the Rangers to sign Cone...
