Susan-- *Fabulous* article...thanks for sending it. I like how David said
this was something he had dreamed of...awe..:) Interesting though that it
seems the rest of the country besides NY doesn't really care about the
series. I think any avid baseball fan can see what a big deal this is and
how historic it is, those who seem to be uninterested probably aren't huge
baseball fans to begin with. Plus, I'm not in NY, nor am I from NY..and I
care! Even at my job I chat with people about this...especially this one
girl who is from NY, and she is a Mets fan...we enjoy giving each other
crap, but really we just enjoy talking baseball. :) I also found what he
said about the "hatred" amusing...:) It really adds to the passion of the
competition, and it sure makes it more intense and dramatic for the fans!

Hmm..so apparently Cone is the favorite for starting Game 4, providing the
Yankees are leading the series...so c'mon Yankees!!! :)

I do hope the Clemens/Piazza thing doesn't blow up again...I'm pretty sick
of hearing about that. Hopefully Clemens will be more careful with him in
this series...Don't need any shallow drama cheapening this great event!

Enjoy the game!! Susan, I am looking for your sign!!

Take care! ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

I was off line basically since Friday afternoon (how scary is that!), but
thanks for the article! Did anyone see the shot at last night's game of Coney
and John Franco kidding around in the dugout. I don't know what they were
talking about but they looked like they were having a great time, and from
everything I've heard about either of them, I'm sure it was a really funny
conversation!

I wish some people in this office would *stop* talking about the Subway Series
- I have to put up with some annoying Mets fans, ha ha!

LET'S GO YANKEES!!

Yes, I agree this article is very interesting in lieu of last night's
situation. I have Dan Patrick on right now, w/ Roger Clemens. He sounds
better today... just hope the momentum doesn't swing in the muts favor!!
The Yankees organization is not about this bad press. Did anyone notice
Louis Polonia showing the balloon that had "Mets in 3000" (indicating that
that would be when they next win)??? I didn't really like that behavior
either. Call me silly but I am still very scared of this team, and don't
want to give them ANYTHING which might pump them up!!

oh... btw...they asked Roger if he would contact Piazza about this whole
situation and Roger said probably not b/c he had already tried earlier this
week and Piazza had refused his calls... This takes away from the wonderful
game they played last night darnit!!!

OK enough from me. Well, we have an off-day, time for me for a brief moment
to become a good wife and cook and do some cleaning... my poor hubby.. he's
been a trooper for being a baseball widow!!!

Have a good day all

Hey all

Here's a story on Paul O'Neill that I thought you'd all like to read

Laura <:)

Paul Shows the Real Deal
By Mark Kriegel

In one white hot moment last night, Roger Clemens picked up the barrel of a
broken bat and threw it at Mike Piazza. In doing this, he revealed something
about that spoiled brat of an inner child, his real self.

Unfortunately, such a shamefully public revelation obscured real matters of
merit for the Yankees.

They have now won 14 World Series games in a row. And if at this point
Yankee
pride still has a persona, it would be that of Paul O'Neill. He is 37 now,
and his years are beginning to show. He slumped badly in September, a hip
pointer diminishing both his trademark leg kick and his bat speed. O'Neill
finished his second consecutive season with a batting average south of .300.
This fact, though it neglected his 100 RBI, resulted in the widespread
allegation that O'Neill was finished.
The Yankees did little to discourage the debate. His contract expires with
the season, and the Yankees made no move to renegotiate. "In past years,"
general manager Brian Cashman said before last night's game, "... we signed
some people back during the season. This year we made a choice before the
season started we weren't going to go ahead and try to negotiate during the
season."

Cashman, an impeccably fair fellow, recognized that O'Neill, unlike the
team's other free agents, has been here longer. But the business of baseball
is business. Nobody merited an exception. And while O'Neill wants to keep
playing, he's been around long enough to know you're only owed what the
contract says.

Still, as judged by the first two games of this 96th World Series, a
championship round presented as a city's civil war, reports of O'Neill's
demise have been preposterously premature. His ninth-inning at-bat Saturday
night changed the first game. With Armando Benitez ahead in the count 1-2,
O'Neill started fouling off pitches, four of them, until the count was full.
Benitez' 10th pitch was ball four. O'Neill became the tying run.

Against Mike Hampton last night, the aging right fielder knocked a single in
the third, and another in the fifth that scored Tino Martinez. "I think it
was just a sinker he took a little off of," said O'Neill.

In the seventh, against Glendon Rusch, O'Neill punched a double down the
first-base line that moved Jorge Posada to third. The next batter, Scott
Brosius, knocked in Posada with a sac fly. Considering the 6-5 final score,
you can argue that O'Neill was the difference in the game.

Last week, Joe Torre pinch-hit for O'Neill against Arthur Rhodes, a lefty
whose playoff prowess could be charitably described as suspect. Last night,
O'Neill made the Mets lefties look like Arthur Rhodes.

Later, he was asked how it felt, getting those hits. "It doesn't matter how
anybody's feeling," he said, demonstrating the testiness that has made the
Yankees such pleasures to deal with of late.

Note that O'Neill was considerably more animated after getting on base.
"When
you get hits in the World Series, I don't care how many times you've been
there, it never gets old."

O'Neill will celebrate his 38th birthday in the offseason. No one knows if
this is the final October of his career. "He's piecing it together," said
Torre. "The hip pointer is gone. But you know there's still some effect from
that. It's not always pretty but it's pretty effective."

That was the most sense Torre made all night. He devoted most of his
postgame
interview to a contradictory, irrational and implausible defense of Roger
Clemens.

O'Neill, as you might expect, sounded some of the same notes as Torre. As it
happened in the first inning, most of America's baseball fans got to see
Clemens' angry bat throw for what it was. Still, O'Neill chose to engage in
the Yankees' exercise in mass denial. Clemens, who pitched an otherwise
brilliant game, didn't lose his cool; the media did.

"Tell you the truth," said O'Neill, "it's all media-related."

Like Clemens, O'Neill has a reputation as a hothead. He's done a lot of
crazy
things with baseball bats. But he's never been seen throwing one at a
runner.
He won't be remembered for losing his cool. That's not his real game. When
he
finally does get old, Paul O'Neill will be best remembered for big hits, big
plays, big games.

note quote from this article:
Later, he was asked how it felt, getting those hits. "It doesn't matter how
anybody's feeling," he said, demonstrating the testiness that has made the
Yankees such pleasures to deal with of late.

IMHO.....it's the little digs like that, which have made the media's
articles such a "pleasure" to read as of late as well!!! (insert red angry
face here)

That O'Neill story just proves my theory on how the media is trying to
brainwash the American public into thinking the Yankees aren't a bunch of
mature men, but a bunch of childish overpayed punks. It's a campaign that's
been going on since they had that freaky perfect season in 1998. At least
Kriegel has the guts to print Paul's comment that "it's all media-related",
even though he's such a hypocrite for continuously proving that point himself
over and over again in this article.

Observe: "Like Clemens, O'Neill has a reputation as a hothead."
--- Since when???? Albert Belle's a hoothead; Carl Everett's a hothead; how
can you possibly classify either of them in that category??? I'm sooo sick of
this... in some respects I just wish this series was over so people would
just shut up about all this Yankee trashtalk...

(sorry, this had nothing to do with Coney, but I really needed to vent right
now...)

Laura, that was a great Paulie article. Paulie handles the rude,
obnoxious press very well. It's gotten to the point where I'm just
skimming the baseball stories in the papers, where I used to devour
them. The negativity is just ridiculous. I want to win this World
Series more than in any other year, just to stick it to everyone who
said we were too old, washed up, etc.

Bad news guys - I heard on the FAN that Torre has decided to give
Denny the start in Game 4. Well, here's wishing him the best!

Here's a link to some nice recent photos of David. The one with
Canseco is funny - I guess you could call it the Hulk and the Hunk!

Sorry to clog up your inbox, but I just found the story in print:

Neagle gets Game 4 nod for Yankees ahead of Cone

By JOSH DUBOW
AP Sports Writer
October 23, 2000

NEW YORK (AP) -- Yankees manager Joe Torre decided to give Denny
Neagle another shot at a postseason start instead of giving David Cone
his first start in more than three weeks.

After days of speculation that Cone would move back into the Yankees'
rotation for Game 4 of the World Series against the New York Mets,
Torre said Monday that he was sticking with Neagle.

``Not having pitched in a month, other than just that one inning, I
was concerned with the length I could get from him,''Torre said of
Cone.

Cone, one of baseball's best big-game pitchers with an 8-3 postseason
record, had his worst season as a pro this year. He went 4-14 with a
6.91 ERA and dislocated his left shoulder diving for a ball in
September.

He has pitched only one inning in the playoffs -- a perfect eighth in
Game 5 against Seattle -- and hasn't made a start since Sept. 30.

``I was happy to have been there in the mix,'' Cone said. ``It made me
feel good. Joe assured me I am part of his plans. I have to be ready.
I'm very confident the bullpen phone is going to ring and my name is
going to be on the line.''

Torre indicated last week that Cone could get the nod for his first
start at Shea Stadium since the Mets traded him to Toronto in 1992.

Neagle lost two starts in the AL championship series against Seattle,
allowing five runs and seven walks in 10 innings, and Torre was
critical of his lack of control.

Neagle was angered by his manager's comments -- calling them
``garbage'' -- but the two have ironed out their differences.

``The only thing frustrating to me was that there was talk that it was
based on me not doing my job in the other two starts,'' Neagle said.
``But I feel I did my job. I feel I did well enough to earn another
chance. I wasn't stewing.''

Torre made his decision about Wednesday's Game 4 after meeting with
both pitchers Monday morning.

``David helped me make the decision,'' he said. ``He said if it helps
that he had no trouble getting ready in the bullpen quickly. Not that
that tipped the scale, but it certainly weighed in the decision.''

Neagle's success against the Mets probably did as well. He is 7-3 in
his career against the Mets, including pitching seven scoreless
innings against them in a 12-1 win for Cincinnati on April 26.

``I've pitched well against these guys in the past,'' he said. ``I
like pitching in this stadium. I always felt Shea is one of the best
pitcher's stadiums in baseball.''

El Duque is doing fine. I think he's going to pitch a heck of a game

Here's something I found in the Daily News about DC:

Cone Sidesteps
Clemens Commentary

By ANTHONY McCARRON
Daily News Sports Writer

When the news broke yesterday that Roger Clemens had been slapped with a
$50,000 fine for throwing a chunk of a shattered bat in Mike Piazza's
direction, reporters looked everywhere for David Cone, the players union
representative to the American League.
When Cone was corralled, he said, "My tenure ended after the regular season.
I'm no longer the rep."

He laughed when he was asked whether his retirement from union activism had
anything to do with any impending career decisions.

"I haven't decided anything yet," said Cone, who has repeatedly said he
wants
to pitch again next season, despite losing his spot in the Yanks rotation
this year and finishing 4-14.

I don't know about the rest of you guys, but today I feel very depressed. I
actually feel defeated!!! My heart goes out to those of you living in NY
and having to put up w/all the new "darlings" of the media, while we
continue to read about the big bad yankees (insert rolling eyes here). What
really worries me is that Joe Torre said in an interview yesterday, he is no
longer having fun. I hope we didn't lose the whole series last night. I
have that sinking feeling tho.

hope everyone has a good day :/

Laura, that story made me feel all depressed...:( Now I really feel like
Coney's throwing in the towel... "don't ask me, I'm not part of the team much
longer to actually say something useful..."
What got me the most depressed about last nite is that I kept having
flashbacks of 1996... the defending World Champions win the first two under
the reins of the two "aces" of the team who are nothing but dominating, then
the "underdogs" come back and win the third, and Neagle starts the fourth...
whatever happens tonite will decide the rest of the series, I'm convinced....
whoever wins this "pivot game" wins the series... and on top of that, unlike
96, everyone WANTS us (and our "salaries") to lose this year... I agree,
Laura, the media has killed what was supposed to be one of the greatest and
most anticipated events in baseball history...:(:(:(
Sorry so bleak... maybe this Coney picture will cheer us up (workout before
game 1)...
