CONESTOGA'S
Broadcast Radio
Most Asked Questions
by New applicants to the program

I hear that at college your are just a number, your professors will never get to know you and there will be hundreds of people in the same class -is this true?
This is not true.  At Conestoga College the BRT program is very much like a family.  Everyone is on a first name basis and most students make friends and build relationships that last a lifetime.

When will I get to use the equipment?
You'll get to use the equipment virtually from day one.  We believe that the best way to learn is by doing and that means getting to use the equipment right away.

Will I be able to get a job in radio?
Ultimately that will depend on you.  If you work hard and are dedicated to learning about broadcasting you should have no trouble finding work.  It's also important to understand that you may have to start at a smaller market, and you may have to consider work out of province.

Is there anything I should do to get ready for the start of classes.
It's always a great idea for radio students to listen to as much radio as possible but other than that - relax and get set for a great experience at Conestoga.

How much will textbooks cost me?
Generally you will spend about $500 for textbooks during your first semeseter  after that you should only have to buy one or two more at the most during your remaining time at Conestoga.  We are asking radio students to purchase or bring headphones and a jump or usb flash drive (2 to 4  gigs should be good).

Is it possible for me or my family to come in for a tour or to talk to the teachers before clases start?
We are always happy to show you and your family members around, just contact Mike Thurnell at (519) 748-5220 ext. 3223 to arrange a tour.

I'm interested in working on CJIQ, can I get involved with the statio
n?
All Broadcasting- Radio  students will be doing work on CJIQ, it's part of the courses.  At Conestoga you WILL be involved.  All students do work that airs on the station and you'll soon hear about other opportunities too.

Is there a work term where I can get experience outside of the college
?
Yes, in the final term students are required to do Field Experience where they will work at a radio or television station that they arrange.  This is a mandatory course, part of the program design and therefore necessary for you to successfully complete in order to recieve your dipl
oma.

What credential will I earn after my two years at Conestoga?
You will earn a diploma in Broadcast Radio.  We do have opportunities for you to bridge into a University degree.  There are a few options and we are optimisitic that more will be available in the near future.  There are also opportunities to increase your "learning" at Conestoga with post diploma programs.  Contact Mike Thurnell for more information.
