Ray Hill Rd. & Rt. 82 (Town St.) House in East Haddam, CT

Here's a little "tid-bit" info that my grandmother had told me.  My grandparents moved from PA to East Haddam in the 50's. One of the Cone's at that time was a carpenter. At least one of them was and/or before the 50's. The houses that I know of that were built by a Cone was the old Salt Box house on the corner of Palemer Martin Rd & Ray Hill Rd. That house was owned by my grandparents, Jack & June Hartzell. From what my grandmother had told me, the Historical Society of East Haddam had asked her to put a plaque or something stating when the house was built. Now, this house is beige color but used to be red. It had burned not long after my grandparents sold it. The man that bought the house had it rebuilt to the original plans. Before my grandparents had owned the house, it was owned or at least occupied by an old sea Capt. which my grandmother swears his spirit was still in the house. Now, another house my grandmother told me about is kiddy-corner to this one. It actually sits on the corner of Ray Hill Rd. & Rt. 82 (Town St.) From what my grandmother told me, it was built in the 1800's. The original house or most of it had burned as well. It was rebuilt on the original foundation. Both of these houses were built by a Cone or the Cone Family. I will check with my grandmother again and ask her if she remembers which Cone (s) it was that built the old saltbox and about when. And after 24 yrs. of being raised and living in East Haddam, I thought the Cone Families were strictly farmers. :>)

Regards,

Carol
