On this day, Frederick Preston Cone, the 27th governor of Florida (January 5 1937- Januaray 7 1941) died at his home in Lake City. Cone, who was known by the sobriquet "Old Swanee," reported shot and wounded a "stubborn Republican, a former Union soldier, and an avid member of the Grand Army of the Republic (per Jerrel H. Shofner) who was about to fill and appointment as the postmaster of White Springs.
