Leroy Jacob Cone's Military Record


Leroy Jacob Cone. Enlisted March 13th, 1862 , by R. K. Clayton in Jasper County, Mississippi, Company A, 40th Mississippi Infantry, card # 47848143, {7195, 7323, 7508} He died at Saltillo, Lee County, Sept 6, 1862. From an Illness.

40th Inf. Regt. {Organized May 1862, Col. W. Bruce Colbert; surrendered July 4, 1863 and paroled July 1863; exchanged Sept 12, 1863; consolidated April 9, 1865 with 3rd and 31st inf. Regts. and designated 3rd inf. Regt. Consolidated}

Leroy left for the Civil War while Living in Paulding, Miss. His Daughter, Mary Jane was only six weeks old when he enlisted. Later, his Wife, Jane, heard that his Regiment was in the area {Meridian} and left with one of their sons to find him. In the meantime Leroy was on leave and started to Paulding, to visit his family. He, on one road and his Wife and Son on another. They missed each other and he returned to his unit. He was never seen again by his family. He died of an illness near Saltillo.
