YALE UNIVERSITY - Commencement


    Sept. 9th. The weather was unfavorable, but the number of strangers
 present was unusually great. Of the literati, were the Presidents of Harvard, Union, Hamilton, Bowdoin, and
 Burlington Colleges.
 The exercises were, Orations, on "The proper culture of the imagination," - "The dignity and utility of the
 philosophy of the mind," - "On the colonization of the blacks in the United States," - "On the association of
 ideas," - "On the influence of poverty in the formation of literary characters," - and "On the value of
 enthusiasm." - Disputations, on the questions, "Have the British conquests in India been beneficial?" - "Ought
 the fine arts to be extensively cultivated in the United States?" - "On the lawfulness of war;" - and a Poem,
 "The Abbe de l'Epee, and his deaf and dumb pupil."

 The honorary degree of Master of Arts was conferred on Mr. Edward Hitchcock, of Deerfield, Mass.
 The degree of Doctor of Medicine was conferred on Julius S. Barnes, Zebulon P. Burnham, John A. Cornwell,
 Ashbel Dart, Wm. S. Goodhue, Jabez G. Hardyear, John P. Kimball, Jared Pardee, and Woodbridge Strong.
 The honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity was conferred on the Rev. Ralph Wardlaw, of Glasgow, and on the
 Rev. Joshua Bates, President of Middlebury College, Vermont. 
 The honorary degree of Doctor of Laws was conferred on the Hon. John Trumbull, one of the Judges of the
 Superior Court of Connecticut.
