THE CAR
HOME
Purchased in 2001 for 700.00 with the intent to build a racer the car sat on the side of my house as a stock 4cyl. for about 6 months. The decision was made to build the car to SCCA ESP class specifications. The list was made of the parts I would need. I then first budgeted the project at 7000.00. Hopeful I could save some money building a carbureted car. With closer look at the rules the new plan was to match 93 Cobra R specs as allowed by ESP class rules. The class rules allow certain updates and/ or back dating many production parts that will fit with no modification from a certain range of vehicles.

Around January 2002 the car made it's first move into the garage for the removal of the entire 4cyl drive train & suspension. Engine, trans, rear end, brake system, spindles & such. After much late night Web shopping the next 11 months was spent obtaining the first batch of parts as economically as possible. Here in the local Albuquerque, New Mexico area the used Mustang parts market has been locked down by one salvage yard that picks up anything that is available. Unfortunately the yard does not do well on pricing. I have done most of my purchasing via mustang message boards, the web in general and through friends.

Piecing together a braking System... The front spindles have been upgraded & improved discs & calipers put on all 4 corners.  A larger master cylinder with a Willwood manual adjustable proportioning valve. Hawk performance carbon metallic pads are the first choice for squeezing the rotors.

On the suspension side, Eibach Springs, Tokico Illumina 5 way adjustables, Maximum Motorsport Caster Camber plates, Motorsport lower front arms with performance bushings, Eibach springs, Mac rear upper & lower control arms. GT sway bar rear and an SVO front..

The rims are 2001 GT 5 spoke with Kuhmo Victo racer tires. This may be upgraded later to authentic 95 Cobra R rims to gain that extra inch of width or perhaps an aftermarket rim with a 10" width.

The conversion from a 4cyl to a 5.0 was a great opportunity to learn.
The Gratinelli in tank fuel pick up, next a Holley Blue electric fuel pump & regulator. The Barry Grant Street Demon is next on the list to And rounds out the fuel delivery. With use of a carb set up the computer will not be needed so I have purchased a Duraspark II Distributor & ignition module. The wiring harness that connects the module to the coil & distributor is not available new any more. I did have luck at a local Truck salvage yard locating one after many attempts to get one online. A little help with wiring & we have ignition!
The short block has about 70k miles on it & is in great shape, I located some unmolested GT40 iron heads and purchased the production valve train to bring them & the cam up to the correct "Cobra" specifications.

The interior will stay mostly stock, I have purchased some nice Tenzo R seats and have plans to have a 6 point custom cage installed later. The AutoMeter ProComp tach is a dead give away mounted on the instrument bezel.
