Demand Freedom for David Meza
David Meza has been sitting in a Chihuahua prison since July 2003. Meza is accused of killing his cousin, Neyra Cervantes, who disappeared on May 13, 2003, part of a decade-long string of largely unsolved femicides. A former resident of Los Angeles, David was visiting family in the state of Chiapas when Neyra disappeared. Within days he traveled to Chihuahua City to help look for his cousin. David gained experience in grassroots organizing as a member of the National Commission for Democracy in Mexico while living in Los Angeles, and he was one of the leading members of his family in pressuring police for a resolution in his cousin's murder. Perhaps because of his public criticism of police, he was detained for questioning and tortured, along with Neyra's father, who was later released. Under torture, David "confessed" to shooting Neyra in the head. The police produced a skull with a bullet wound that they claimed was Neyra's; however, the Alameda Country Sheriff, who ran DNA tests on Neyra's remains, claims the skull belongs to a man. Despite protests from his family, including Neyra's mother, David is currently awaiting sentencing for her murder.
Join Protests in Los Angeles: Loyola Marymount University students participating in a delegation organized by MSN met with David in the Chihuahua prison in January. They have joined family and friends of David in Los Angeles to protest in front of the Mexican consulate, and promise to continue to protest until David is released. Distrito Judicial Morelos

Sinceramente,

Letter for the freedom of David Meza Argueta, detained in Chihuahua, Chihuahua, Mexico. Case #286-03
Lic. Aram Delgado Garcia
Juez Sexto de la Penal
Distrito Judicial Morelos
Allende 901, C.P. 31100
Chihuahua, Chih. Mexico
I write to you, Judge Aram Delgado Garcia, respectfully soliciting the freedom of David Meza Argueta who has been falsely imprisoned since July 14, 2003, accused of the murder of Neyra Azucena Cervante.
According to a series of reports from the human rights organization Amnesty International, news articles, and testimonies of relatives of Neyra, including those of Sra. Patricia Cervantes, mother of Neyra and aunt of David, he was falsely incriminated under severe torture and since the day that Neyra was murdered, David has been helping her family look for her. It has recently been discovered that some of the officials who ordered his torture are being investigated for crimes related to narcorafficing.
David lived in Los Angeles, California for more than 9 years and was an exemplary citizen, an excellent worker like many thousands of Mexicans that look for a better future for their families. David was also an activist for the human rights of his fellow people and was part of the fight for legalization and citizenship, rights for workers, and everything that had to do with improving the conditions of our population in the United States of America.
David Meza does not have a prior criminal record and does not use drugs, alcohol, or have any other such problems.
It is for all of these reasons that a large group of Mexicans and non-Mexicans in the United States request and cry out to you for the freedom of David Meza Argueta, knowing that justice and the application of the law places a high responsibility on you as the Judge and without doubt that you will fulfill your responsibilities.
Sincerely,
