Our History

The Concord Music Club was organized in November of 1900 by a small group of women for the "mutual study and enjoyment of music." These early organizers were all practicing amateur or professional musicians. Since that time the membership has grown to include men, women and young people, some of whom are performers while many simply enjoy music and encourage music appreciation for the whole community.

In 1970 the Concord Music Club initiated the Arthur R. Virgin competition with monies donated by Mr. Virgin. "The competition is established to offer young people of junior and senior high school age incentive and encouragement for the serious study of applied music both instrumental and vocal and to reward excellence in musical performance." As further incentives to budding musicians, the Club makes available scholarships to students planning to further their studies in music.

A Junior Music Club was also established to support young musicians and encourage interest in music among young people. Many older members have fond memories of Jr. Music Club performances and meetings. The Junior Music Club has recently been reorganized to give students entering grades 7- 12 a chance to share their love of music with others their own age.
