Beleive it or not bettas can tell you how they feel or whats up by how the move around. They express them selves not through words like humans but through their body, it is almost like a sign language. Well I gave it a name, I call it Bettanese. And it is time you take a few few lessons in Bettanese. I will teach you all the signs I know and how to read them. Here are some signs you should know:
Flaring: This is when a betta extends their fins to the furthest extent and open the gills so that they spread around the face forming something like a beard. Meaning: Well this can have a lot of meanings so here are the following: 1. Showing off to the opposite gender kind of saying "whoa hello there pretty little thing want to spwan with me" this is also courting and it is when a male does it to a female 2. Showing off to the same gender it is kind of a challenge like "look at me, I'm buff and tuff just try and take me" Both female and male bettas do this and sometimes they even do it to the opposite gender. 3. Showing domance like saying "look pal I'm in charge here and you will follow my orders and do as I say" females who share a tank do this to set the pecking order.
Blowing a Bubblenest: This is where the male and sometimes but very rarely the female makes a nest on the surface of bubbles on the surface of the water. Meaning: This also can have a number of meanings, see how complicated Bettanese. The meanings are the following: 1. When a male in the spwaning tank does this he is saying something like "I'm ready to be a father." 2. When a male does it in his own little tank and there is no female around he is saying "Well I just had to let you know that you are taking good care of me and I am very happy." 3. A female in the spawning tank may build a bubblenest and she is saying "Oh my I have got to get these eggs out of me soon so let us hurry up here and get the nest down." 4. When a female is in her own little tank and blows a bubblenest it might mean something like the following "Oh I am happy and filled with eggs, breed me please."
Fins Clamped Together: This is where instead of the fins extended they are clumped together. Meaning: This is has to common explantions: 1. The betta is saying "I'm sick" 2. The betta is saying "I'm so sad and depressed." |
