So have you finally decided to get a Betta. Great!! So now you need to know how to pick the right Betta. That may sound easy but may prove to be difficult. You don't want to buy a sick Betta. So when you are picking out your Betta find a color you like(of coarse). But it does not stop there. Don't just pick a random Betta it must show signs of life:). To pick a good Betta you must find one that is in good shape and I will tell you how to do that. First and most important, is it just laying on the bottom or kinda swimming around. You should pick the one that is swimming around because it is livly. But you may not always be able to judge by this because if it is in a tiny little cup then there may not be enough space for it to swim around. Fret not my friend there are other ways, don't panic. Another way to tell is if its fins are clumped together or spread apart. If a Betta has its fins spread apart it is called flareing. If you find a Betta that's flaring its fins(mainly males do this because there fins are longer) then that would be a good choice because it is full of energy. But you can't always rely on this because they really only flare to show there tuffer than another male or to show off to the lady Bettas:). But the one of the easiest ways to tell is do they have a bubble nest. You may ask whats a bubble nest, have pateince my young apprentice for I will tell you. A Bubble nest is a wad of bubbles a male Betta will make at the surface of water. It looks like a whole bunch of small bubbles stuck together(Which in fact it is:). Now all the information above was for if you were buying it from a petstore. Now if you are ordering it off line or from a breeder then you may not always see the Betta before hand. But don't worry if you get it from either of these places they will most likely be good bettas(especially breeder Bettas). If the Betta was mailed to you and does not blow bubble nests right away or is near the bottom or just looks sad don't worry once again. It is just going through a period of shock and needs a few days to adjust. And well I hope this helps you out. |
