The day of the race, Nov. 1st, was a beautiful sunny day with temperatures in the mid-80's and a strong breeze from the northeast. The wind had churned up the sea a bit making visibility practically zilch (very unlike normal Bahamas conditions) and creating a current against the direction we were supposed to swim. Race Director Bert Bell changed the swim direction to make it safer, and we swam in a clockwise direction, round the buoys, and then exited up Taino Beach to the transition area for the next leg: a 15 mile bike ride.
That northeast wind continued to build and had many people huffing and puffing as we rode straight into it for the first half of the bike ride. But boy, did we fly on the home stretch, reaching speeds around 25mph!
The last leg was the hardest. A 3 mile run, in the hot sun, when your legs feel like jello was a challenge but with so many friends, family, and Conchwoman Club supporters cheering us on we all smiled, waved, and eventually finished the race.
It was fun! We'll be back next year. Our sincere and most heartfelt thanks to Bert Bell for his encouragement of our group and for hosting such a well-run event. And most importantly, to all of our friends, family,and loved ones who put up with us in constant training mode and never let us doubt that a Conchwoman can do it!
