BASRA Swim 2004
The 34th Annual Bernie Butler BASRA Marathon Swim was held this year on Saturday August 21st.

While the almost 2 mile swim race is the highlight of the day, the organizers made sure that this was a family participation event.  Food stands, dunk tank, bouncy castle, beach bar, live entertainment, fashion show, and a BASRA retail outlet  kept everyone on the beach having fun and, most importantly, raising funds for our all-volunteer BASRA force - the Bahamas equivilant to the Coast Guard -

The day started out calm but as the race progressed the wind and waves picked up from the west making this year a bit of a challenge.  Six Conchwomen finished the race, and in true Conchwoman style, partied afterwards!

The future looks bright for female swimmers in the Bahamas, judging by the performance of these three! In the Ladies 30-39 age group, the Conchwomen took 2nd (Vicki), 3rd (Sarah), 4th (Amber, not pictured), and 6th (Natasha).

Conchwomen placed well in the Ladies 40-49 group too...
Ruthann 3rd and Tui 4th!
After the swim, the Conchwomen volunteered to work at the Beach Bar (tough assignment!).  Here Amber and Vicki ham it up for the crowds.

Even the Unexso dolphins tried to join the swim, but they were disqualified for using fins!
Skydiver extraordinaire Dave Mellor decided to "drop in" on the fun.

Plenty of others came by sea...
or was that to see and be seen?
And finally, the US Coast Guard paid tribute to BASRA with an exciting helicopter and diver demo.  You should have felt the force of the wind generated by the heli's downdraft!

Thanks to all who made it a great day!
