Ever wondered how cowries look before they grow up?  Here is a series of C. mauritiana L., from  little more than a baby, to fully adult.  Enjoy!

VERY fragile and light shell. Universal gold-tan patterning  (streaking/netting) over darker banding layer beneath over entire dorsum  and base; white fossula (?) exposed; light but vibrant purple  interior. Major suture line mending 6 mm from labral lip on dorsal  edge. Protoconch markedly protuberant. On base, labral lip has not turned  under at all and has no evidence of teeth whatsoever. Columella has no  teeth either; fossula (?) twisting outwardly and still forming. Wide open  aperature in early bulla formation.

 Cypraea mauritanea Linne,1758

Geographical:

Bolinao, Ligayen Gulf, Luzon, Philippines; under rocks and rubble, shallow  water, on reef at low tide
