I found this little 16mm Epitonium on 21 January, 2000. It was in shallow water, crabbed, but another shell of the same species was collected a couple of years ago in 140 feet in front of Pago Pago Harbor, American Samoa, by Randy Hart. This one came from the north side of Utungake Island, Vava'u, Tongo. Art [the Questioning Epi-man, ie.) is working on the ID, but I thought it was pretty enough to share.

This miter was collected last year by Randy Hart. It was
found dead on the south beach of Aunu'u Island, American
Samoa, with some of the animal still in the shell. 26.3mm
long. I can't put a name on it. Can you? Right click on
the
images and save the photos to your computer if you would
like to see the large images. They will pop up full-size
when
you bring them back up.

Vexillum cf or affin. purpuratum (Reeve, 1845)
Here's a little Vexillum I found Jan 13, 2000. It was collected in Pago Pago Harbor, American Samoa, in shallow water under a rock, dead. The colors and shape make it look like it's probably suavis, but it is quite different from the photo in the PP&P miter book, which is also quite different from the one figured in Hans Turner's book #1. It is about 10mm long. Dr. Turner thinks it is undescribed, while Richard Salisbury opines that it is Vexillum purpuratum (Reeve, 1845).

Several hours spent surfing the net for Opisthobranch
pics, but no ID on this one yet. It was collected just before
midnight on 15 January 2000, crawling on
coarse sand in shallow water near shore, Utulei village, west Pago Pago
Harbor, Am. Samoa. The shell is about 7mm long, the entire
animal about 18mm.
E-mail if you would like to see
a larger pic with a bit more
detail.
