| CC: When did Unearth form and how did you come up with the name? How long have you guys known each other? SLO: We started in August of 1998 and we wanted to write the best metal/hardcore that we could and we're doing it right now! Our old drummer actually picked out that name. It's always hard to pick out a band name and there are a lot of horrible names out there. We just couldn't think of one and our drummer wanted to unearth a new sound. So we thought about metal meets the hardcore world and we decided it was a great name for a band. So we just went on from there We were all in bands before hand and we played shows with each other and I have known the guys from the band for at least a decade. CC: What genre of music do you consider Unearth to be? What makes Unearth different from every other band out there in your genre? SLO: Umm...that is a good one.. I think we are more of a metal band with hardcore influences. I think that's the best way to answer that one. We bring a lot of different things to the table. We have influences of basic Iron Maiden to Earth Crisis. I think we do the mix of metal meets hardcore. CC: Who was your greatest influence in your decision to become a musician, any particular person or band? SLO: My father was big in rock n' roll. I grew up in a house of like a thousand records being played all the time. He got me into rock n' roll and I think my favorite band of all time would be Pantera. That really changed my life and made me want this more as appose to going out there and doing something else. CC: Is there anything else besides music you could see yourself doing if you weren't with Unearth? SLO: I would be involved in music doing something. You know, if I worked at a label or just something else with music. CC: Who is behind the writing process of Unearth? How do you feel your music influences your fans? SLO: Its all pretty equal. We all think of lyrics and we all sit down and practice and we just put together songs. I hope in a positive way. I mean I hope they like the record itself and get a positive vibe. We do the best we can. CC: What is your favorite venue to play at? Who is your favorite band to tour with? SLO: We have fun every night. I hate barricades, that's just not fun. I like kids on the stage and crowd surfing and just having fun. We are just normal dudes that like to have fun and have other bands have fun with us. There are bands we just click with Everytime I Die along with the bands we are just friends with. It's just a fun time going out with them. CC: Are you working on any new material? Is there a new Unearth Album in the working? SLO: We actually had practice today and we have a couple of songs that we are putting together. There is no rush, we just want to push this record as long as we can and probably put out another record in 06'. We just have a few songs we are piecing together but nothing solid yet. We still like this record. CC: What is your opinion on file sharing? SLO: I think it's a good and bad thing. It actually gets our music into more hands. As far as bands getting paid by labels that doesn't happen much anyways so I think its definitely more of good thing for fans and it will just increase the people going to our shows. CC: Do you have any crazy tour stories you would like to share with us? SLO: There are always weird things that happen. I was on stage just before we played and the stage was real dark because of setting up stuff. I was taking a walk and I stepped right off the stage, because I thought there was a step there and I fell about 6ft down to the floor and I crushed Cory from Norma Jean. He was pretty bummed out and I told him I didn't know the stage ended there but it was pretty funny though! |
